Colorado--Aurora / Denver 1-2 Players Looking for some Role Playing (Pathfinder / D&D or...?)

Just got back to Denver after being relocated to NJ for a year, and figured I'd post here to say that I'm looking for a new game to join.

I've been playing D&D since the boxed sets, I worked at a gaming store in undergrad, I've played and/or play-tested well over twenty game systems, and I even have a few articles slated to be published sometime next year.

I'm currently in Pathfinder Society games at Enchanted Grounds and another Pathfinder Adventure Path campaign, but for the last couple of years (here and then in NJ) I've fallen into groups with inconsistent play schedules, and most of them haven't lasted long enough to ever complete a campaign.

This is radically different from the games I remember and loved in the past, where some of my old groups stayed together for 5+ real years, and we often had the same characters & same party for most of that time (barring the odd character death and/or player who got married and moved away).

I guess what I'm looking for is that old style of gaming. I don't necessarily mean an 'Old School' game played in 1st or 2nd Edition, as I do like Pathfinder and can tolerate 4e, but I'm looking for the old way games were played--with people creating and contributing to a storyline that goes beyond the characters, and where role-playing is something to be enjoyed as a way to flesh out your character and there's a decent level of PC-PC and PC-NPC interactions (though it doesn't have to be Shakespeare in the Park or Night at the Improv).

Lately, all the games I've played in have been very 'flat', with almost no descriptions of anything from what the room looks like to how the combat is going. It is, essentially, just miniature combat with the illusion of being an RPG.

There usually are no character descriptions, or character-to-character conversations or any attempt at a back-story or mutual party history.

I realize "RP-Heavy" games aren't for everyone, and I'm not saying they're a *better* way to game over the Beer & Pretzels uber-casual games I keep running into.

I'm just saying that I, personally, like my RPGs to have a nice mix of descriptive combat, cinematic narrative, and complex plots with story lines that go beyond the mere "Go collect 300 goblin ears and report back to me for your reward" kinda thing...

Don't get me wrong, I love combat and action, I just want something *more* than pushing minis around the map for 8hrs...

While I've run tons of campaigns, I'm really looking to play, not run. I also have a friend with the same style of gaming who would also join in, so that's one less player we'd need (and she usually plays Clerics is that helps).

Probably looking for a weekend game, Saturday or Sunday afternoons being ideal (maybe ever other weekend?). I live in SE Aurora by Arapahoe & E-470, but often travel to Enchanted Grounds for PFS games if that's a convenient location for anyone else. My place is small but could handle maybe 5 people in a pinch.

SOOooo, IF anyone still runs this style of game, or wants to start up a group with this blend of RP & Story as well as Action/Combat please post here or let me know via email.

Thanks,
VtM

I live in golden, well it is Lakewood. But I am trying to run a Kingmaker. But I am finding that every Session it is just what do we kill to night. I do like a more role-playing environment. I have tried to play in a Gaming group that meet over there and played in a group that played in golden when I lived in Parker.

I have played in very long Games. I was also a founding member of the Cam. I have been in many strong and stable gaming groups. My old group in Denver lives from C/S to Ft. Collins. They just play WOW now.

The kind of game you're describing is exactly what I've been looking for. I've been away from RPG's since TSR went under but I played tons of OD&D, AD&D, and AD&D2E. I've recently returned to the hobby and I love the Pathfinder rules but have found most of the games I've participted in so far to be a board game with tiny bits of role playing peppered in here and there. If you want to get a group together, count me in (I live in Denver). I've been away from role playing for too long to jump back into DM/GMing right away but I'd love to play in a "RP heavy" campain.

Heh, well you guys've made me feel less alone at least. I really am bummed over the loss of the "RP" side of playing RPGs...but maybe it's just a thing of the past, never to return no matter the system.

BUT, I'm still looking, I've spammed the local MeetUp & Yahoo Groups sites, so far no response, but IF I find something I'll post here or PM you. If you find something, drop a line...

Valmar,

Yes, please do!

I began experimenting with role playing games with the D&D “Red Box” back in 1984. Because my friends and I were all still pretty young we couldn’t really afford to purchase the TSR modules so we just made up adventures and took turns running each other through them. In retrospect, those early games were extremely bland. The DM would always start us out standing in front of a dungeon entrance (caves/underground ruins/hideouts/etc.) and we’d charge into the dark and go from room to room killing random monsters. More often than not, the monsters found in one room had nothing to do with the monsters in the next, and there was never any reason for what we were doing beyond getting treasure. We had lots of fun but we were just getting our feet wet with D&D and we played it more like a tabletop wargame than an RPG.

About a year later, we moved from D&D to AD&D. About that time we discovered some of the fantasy novels TSR had published. At just $4 each, we could easily afford those so we bought them, traded them, and read them over and over again. It was then that the world of real role playing opened up to us. We started coming up with backgrounds, goals, and objectives for our PCs. We started role playing our encounters with NPCs (as opposed to just saying “the innkeeper tells you where the entrance to the caves are. You go find it. You’re at the cave entrance. What do you do?”). We started role playing our stays in towns, our journeys from place to place, and just about everything else. Those games were so much fun. The goal became furthering the storyline as opposed to leveling up and getting treasure. That was fun too, but it took a back seat to enjoying and playing out the story (or, more accurately, combat/leveling became mechanics we used to actually further the storyline).

In my experience with Pathfinder so far, I’ve found the games to be much like those early “Red Box” games I played. Not that there is no role playing at all, but once you get to the main part of the game, it’s all about pushing your minis from room to room killing monsters and collecting treasure. Obviously, this is not the fault of Pathfinder (which encourages role playing everywhere). For me, the problem has been that the games I’ve played have been Pathfinder Society games, which don’t really lend themselves to the role playing experience. Not because of the modules themselves, which are fantastic, but because they’re usually played in a public place, with players you haven’t met before, etc. It makes everyone feel a bit inhibited and so they just focus on the dice and the minis. It’s been fun, but I really miss the role playing experience.

Please contact me if you want to start up a group!

Exactly what I'm looking for as well! I live in Englewood near Hampden & Broadway. If you're looking for another player/DM shoot me a message with contact info. I've been playing since 1982. I prefer D&D 3.5 but anything will do!
