Liberty's Edge

I am duo-DMing a game with a close friend and we each have a "plot pony" character to show up and push the party in the right direction. Right now he is finishing up his portion and soon enough I will be jumping in as main DM.
We started from level 1 and are about to hit 5 running the Curse/Revenge of the Kobold King modules for right now to teach our group the basics and make them fear traps. 2/5 players are new to PF

The current GM has an inquisitor that has showed to save our ass once and I am playing a Dwarf Ranger and I am going for a sword and board feel, Heavy Steel and Dwarven waraxe, Except WAY more shield focus than anything, I am looking to brutalize some orcs with the broadside of a shield. He will most likely act as a guide to the party and a stepin for a player when we might be short one when I take over.
I Favor Orcs and Underground for my terrain
Stats are as follows
Str [19] +4
Dex [17] +3
Con [12] +1
Int [12] +1
Wis [12] +1
Cha [9] -1
After taking a one level dip into fighter at level 2 to pick up Heavy Armor proficiency (For the Mithril Fullplate the party found) and extra AC I went back to Ranger. So as things sit I have the following Feats

Weapon Focus (Spiked Heavy Shield)-First level
Improved Shield Bash - Fighter Bonus Feat
Two weapon Fighting -Ranger Path
Double Slice - Third Level
Endurance - Ranger 3rd Level

I obviously want to continue down the Slam spec tree, and work towards the hopes of being a halfway proficient Tank figure to step up in case things get hairy.

My problem is I have a choice to get back to Fighter for the feat selection, or stick out ranger for the animal companion (Calculated at only -2 if I choose a SPECIFIC animal type) to give more variety, and would open up the door to Boon Companion when I get back to multi-classing fighter/ some prestige class.

Basically what I am looking for is some advice. I am not exactly sure an animal companion would work too well with the character concept although I would be hard pressed to find better utility.

Your thoughts?

I would like some opinions here, anybody? Somebody? I was thinking maybe an animal companion would be pretty neat, maybe something like a Rhino or Bison for a dwarf?

Can you DO those with a ranger? I thought they had a much more limited choice than druids do. I mean they have a specific list pointed out in their class, and the ones in the Monster Manual are druid-only I thought. 'Course you're 1/2 DM so it's your call. Mounted 2-weapon dwarves always remind me of Arthogate...

The tricky things with mounts like those is that a Dwarf's legs really aren't long enough to go down low enough to control them adequately.

(There's a reason dwarves aren't a mounted culture in a lot of fantasy lol)

Honestly though, they do seem cool, so do whatever you like, your the GM.

(Sorry I didn't comment sooner Themetrecsystem, I read the term 'plot pony' and figured I couldn't be of much help here because I don't believe in using that sort of device.)

Yea, they can choose any of the same ones a druid can, it has a list of the names that are already located in the druid section but an expanded list of animals available for either class is in the Bestiary. Taking the Enhanced Companion option in the Campaign book it reduces the level lag by 2 compared to druids.

I am primarily only going to use him as a guide for the somewhat inexperienced group when things get really bad, otherwise he will be acting the part of the scout and messenger. Which is why I think the animal companion would work out pretty well. Like I said, I am only DM'ing half the time anyway, so he is very much still an active PC. Godmode has been disable for sure.

What in terms of an animal companion do you thing would be cool? I doubt I will be able to use it as a mount as the level progression to get most things to large isn't until at least level 7.

I don't know if it's an option, but I think a Boar (wild pig + tusks) would make a really badass animal companion for a dwarf.

This might seem a little bit "WoW"ish but I really think some kind of mountain goat would be really cool, but as is there are no statblocks for goats in the game let alone one for an animal companion :(

2nd the Boar companion.

A pterodadon would be interesting. It's big enough to serve as a flying mount, eventually. And really, who doesn't want one of those?

Hmmm an expedition to the Mediogalti Islands wouldn't be too much of a stretch for my character.... an Ankylosaurus would be pretty much the coolest mount ever.
