Since Decipher has dropped the STAR TREK licence, is there any word on another company looking to pick up the setting (perhaps based on the JJ Abrams movie)?

Star Trek RPG has been produced by 3 different publishers with 3 different gaming systems at some time or another. I know that Decipher has been running into financial problems due to embezzlement by a family member.
My personal opinion is that the most likely senerio is that WOTC might take up the helm since they own the studio that produced the 2nd Star Trek RPG series. Unfortunately Hasbo has been really skittish on their support of RPGs lately. They just recently anounced that they were not renewing their Star Wars license.
Kind of a shame since I think the rules for Star Wars would probably be a natural fit for Star Trek as well.

Most game companies aren't willing to risk dealing with Star Trek after what happened to WotC. The rights to publish the gamer were revoked before the ink was dry on the check used to purchase Last Unicorn from what I heard.
If you could divorce Paramount's legal department from the game license then the chances of getting it published will go up. Fat chance of that, however.

There is a group that has a perpetual license for their version of Star Trek RPG. They publish it for several systems including Gurps and D20 Modern.
Their link is:
Starfleet Games are very limited to what they can do with their license though. They can do any thing they want with Starfleet Battles but they can only create material for RPGs from the Kirk era. They did put out an RPG called Starfleet task force where you played the away-team not the command crew like all the rest of the ST RPGs.

Fortunately, this would be perfect for what I would want.

I had also heard that the Roddenberry estate was particularly hard to work with.
Star Trek is held with a certain level of respect by both Paramount and the Roddenberry family. Most of the licensing issues tend to stem from the schizophrenic attitude Paramount has based on who is currently running its parent company Viacom.
Licensing is taken much more seriously than how Lucas Films takes it for Star Wars. If you ever wonder why there is such a difference between the types of Star Trek merchandise compared to Star Wars merchandise (as well as spin-offs) this is the reason.
Interestingly Star Trek the Motion Picture was one of the first Happy Meal promotions for McDonalds when they first started the self packaged kid's meal concept.

Earlier this week, WizKids/NECA announced a Star Trek HeroClix game debuting in December. As soon as it's added to our distributor's catalog, it'll show up here.
(I know, it's not an RPG... but it's something new, anyway!)

I predict Green Ronin. Seriously, aren't they ending up with all the licenses these days?
You know, the more I am learning about it, the better Prime Directive is sounding.
On an interresting side note, they are having their own flamewar problem ... called "the miniskirt war". ;D
With d20 Modern going out of print, I expect that I would need to fall back to the d20 Prime Directive based on D&D (... er, PathfinderRPG).
