Welcome to the discussion thread for the 4e Eberron campaign!
Here are the basics for character creation...
* Standard character creation, anything in the Character Builder is acceptable (including FR material and stuff from Dragon, etc.).
* No evil alignments
* You start out in an altruistic orphanage in Sharn. Most likely, you are an orphan, around the age of 16. The orphanage is run by a kalashtar named Mevitari and concentrates on the veneration of Lanatai, the Lady of the Garden, one of the legendary quori who brought the Path of Light to Khorvaire. Mevitari is religiously strict; he barely tolerates orphans who show affinity to other religions but does so as long as the orphan continues his Path of Light practices and meditations. Create a character background that explains why you are at this orphanage and how you may have gained your powers, skills, etc. (you may have gained your abilities outside the orphanage, perhaps secretly). Warforged don't technically "grow up," so any warforged in the group needs to have some reason for being there and doesn't necessarily have to be an orphan.
* Your characters most likely know each other and you may want to work with others in the group with background creation and so on. Overall, you remain loyal and trusting of each other.
* Describe the first impression you give (which includes appearance), at least two personality quirks, one major goal, two minor goals, and one secret your character harbors (could be a minor secret, such as a crush, or a major secret, such as belonging to a mysterious secret society). Having grown up in a house run by a kalashtar and followed the Path of Light, you are most likely eccentric in some way.
* It would be nice if all four roles are represented, but it's not required. However, no one has suggested a Leader role. If no one wishes to take that role, I may NPC a healer of some kind.
In answer to Xabulba's question regarding specific Eberron flavor, I'll be using the 4e Eberron books as my primary source, with the 3e books as backup inspiration. However, I consider campaign settings to be guidebooks, not canonical facts that must be adhered to. As this is our shared universe, I'm not going to worry over whether someone's background contradicts the books as long as the basic feel and premises of Eberron remain and we stay consistent within our campaign.
Along the same lines, it's not a problem, hellacious huni, if you don't have the 4e books.

Feel free to put your character up here, including all the background info (you can use spoilers so it's not one big long thread). Alternatively, you can email me:
whimsychris -a-t- gmail
I have the Character Builder, so feel free to email me that file if you wish.
You shouldn't know each other's secret, so either make sure that's in a spoiler (and trust that other players won't read it) or email me.

Here is Tulgeikh's basic background.
Tulgeikh’s parents were hired as mercenaries for the Denith and were killed in action when he was 6. A house Denith rep gave Tulgeikh to Mevitari to raise until he is old enough to take over the obligation of his dead parents contracts.
A rebellious child Tulgeikh would often and regularly run away to the cogs to listen to the old orcs tell him of life in the Shadow Marches and the tales and legends of the orcs. After Tulgeikh killed a minotaur bully that was harassing the elder orcs the orc headwoman began teaching him the primal power and philosophy needed to become a warden of nature.
Posting this in case anyone wants to incorparate it into there own or bounce ideas off to work into there own background.

Well, if you've been sneaking out Lam's probably been joining you, at least long enough to get out of the orphanage. You'd also be the most likely to know that he's been ordained as a cleric of the Traveler a few months ago and his new bout of interest in the Path of Light is just to humor Mevitari and maybe get a gift in the bargain.

Looking good!

So far it appears we have:
Lamander - Changeling cleric
Tulgeikh - Orc warden
Amelia (no character name yet) - Human psion
an_thanghe (no character name yet) - Halfling sorcerer
Looks like all roles are represented, which is helpful. It's also a fun, interesting mix of races, classes, power sources. I'm not sure of hellacious huni's commitment yet, since I haven't heard from him since Friday.
I'm going to be out of town part of Tuesday and all of Wednesday. If we can get characters wrapped up by Tuesday, then I'll start the campaign on Thursday.
Looking forward to more character backgrounds/personalities/etc!

Just in case you didn't notice, I'll just post my background in this thread as well as in my alias.
Personality: Lam acts however you want him to. You want a good follower of the Path of Light? He'll do that. You want a buddy to drink with? He'll go along. You need a shoulder to cry on? He's right here. Still, there's no way of knowing how much is genuine and how much is just an act to get close and show you why his gifts should never be trusted.
Background: Lam was left on the orphanage's doorstep when he was only a babe. His mother probably wasn't expecting a changeling, but that's irrelevant. He probably spent more time wandering the streets looking for trouble than he did inside in his youth, and that tended to get him into trouble. However, one day a year ago, he met a priestess of The Traveler in his wanderings. He became enraptured by the religion (among other things) and was soon sworn as a priest. Meanwhile, he was also making a greater-than-usual show to Mevitari of following the Path of Light.
Other Stuff:
Quirks:
-Has an extensive collection of holy symbols. Alright, he only has two at the moment, but it's going to be extensive one day!
-I suppose the whole "constantly changing appearance/personality" bit would probably count.
Secrets:
-The fact that he's a priest of The Traveler is a secret, but really only hidden from Mevitari. What is secret from everyone is who taught him. Lam saw the woman's face on a wanted poster, and who knows if/when she'll come around to call in a favor.
Goals:
Major- Create some variety of change that will go down in history. Take over a major crime family, cause a revolution, reveal a major politician's bastard son, just about anything will do.
Minor- Become an ordained member of every major religion in Khorvaire under one guise or another. Really, he just wants to do it to say he did.
-Other than that, get rich and live an indulgent life.

Chris, I would like in if there's still room. I can get a character together quickly, just don't tell my wife I'm in another PBP. I've narrowed my ideas to swordmage, avenger, seeker, ranger, tempest fighter. I have to get into character builder and see what comes out before I make a final decision though.

There's still room for one more. Pretty much anything would be okay to play at this point.

Up and ready. One Psion girl. It'll be fun taking psionics for a spin! Background and quirks are non spoiled, in case other PCs wanted to peek.
Uh, you put down 10 instead of 18 for Intelligence.
Also, I'm unspoiling my quirks in my alias, and so far all the characters except for possibly Kyleria would know about his true religion.

Ack, thanks for the catch!

Nice work Amelia!
Update:
Lamander - Changeling cleric
Tulgeikh - Orc warden
Kyleria - Human psion
Ostran - Halfling sorcerer
Cogmin the Clockwork Man - Warforged fighterAssuming bmars3 joins us, we have six players.
Thanks :) I wanted to try and work up a secret, at least, that's tosses out some play hooks for ya.

Ostran |

It is good to meet you all. I have two questions to start.. My first question is, are we all going to know each other (as we "grew up together"... well not Cogmin, he was sent to us pre-assembled. hehehe. Just kidding Cog) or what?
My other question is; this is my first time PbP so how does this work exactly? I just want to know so I can dedicate the right amount of time/timeframe so as not to piss everyone else off by not being here.

Whimsy Chris |

Although the first post for the campaign is up, there is still more information I want to give each of your characters so no need to begin posting.
The first post gives you some additional information regarding the orphanage and the proprietor and sets off the story; it's something to whet your appetite. Enjoy!

This depends mostly on you. Is Ostran an orphan or something else? How long has he been there? Most likely he knows the other characters.

Basically, you dedicate yourself to at least one post per day in the pbp thread I just put up. If you can't post for any length of time (vacation, etc.) just let us know in this thread.
At some point, we may want to handle battles during a live dedicated time so that said battles don't slow us down too much. There are many different ways to do this, so I want to get everyone's feedback as far as availability/willingness and potential tools. For now, however, it's more like a shared novel where you fill in the details about what your character is doing. It's a slow process, but it can be very rewarding.
The first post of this thread may help answer additional questions, as it has a lot of info about creating your character. You may want to look over other php threads to see how they've been doing it to. And feel free to ask more questions.

Yeah, one post a day and putting your character sheet and background info on your alias and you'll be fine.

Thanks. I think I have everything set up, if I don't just let me know. Just for the record, I am all for the "growing up together". It is easier for us to start off. :)

Nice background and personality! Got your email too. Thanks!
Your ability scores are much higher than what is normally given for a "legal" character at 1st level. Otherwise, the stats look good. Let me know if you need help determining how the point buy system works for the ability scores.

I am adjusting my alias now.
Thanks. Just FYI, you'll need to either change your feat or your Int, as Jack of All Trades requires an Int 13.
It looks like people have already kind of introduced themselves to the pbp, so feel free to write something up regarding your experience these many years and/or your plans for the day of the races.
Glad to have you on board. It looks like it's going to be fun, diverse group.

Thanks for the heads up. I switched feats from JoAT to Arcane Spellfury. I will adjust my profile tomorrow afternoon as it is time for my daily dose of 4 hours of sleep. :)
By the way, Day of the Races???

See official pbp thread. Most of your in-character actions and the official roleplaying will happen in the linked thread. Discussions about the game or characters happen here.

Cogmin's almost ready - only, not sure the 4e bonuses and penalties for being a warforged. Are there any to stats?
No penalties to stats for any race. Here's Warforged racials:
+2 str and con
Size: Medium
Speed: 6
Vision: Normal
Languages: Common
Skill Bonus: +2 to Endurance and Intimidate
Living Construct: You are a living construct. You do not need to eat, drink, breathe, or sleep. You never make endurance checks to resist the effects of starvation, thirst, or suffocation. All other conditions and effects affect you normally.
Unsleeping Watcher: You do not sleep and instead enter a state of inactivity for four hours to gain the benefits of an extended rest. While in this state you are fully aware of your surroundings and notice approaching enemies and other events as normal.
Warforged Resilience: You have a +2 racial bonus to saves against continuing damage. Also, when you make a death save you can take the better result of your die roll or 10.
Warforged Mind: You gain a racial bonus of +1 to your will.
Warforged Resolve: You have the Warforged Resolve power:
Encounter*Healing
Minor Action Personal
Effect: You gain a number of temporary hit points equal to 3+
one half your level and can make a saving throw against one effect
on you that deals ongoing damage. If you are bloodied, you also
regain hit points equal to 3+one half your level.
