Lets talk miniatures!!! (SPOILERS)

Rise of the Runelords

So the deal is this... so many minis needed that don't exist in the premade ddm. So here I want to brainstorm ideas for stuff that isn't already premade, what can be easily modded on a budget? Let's go!

As I'm past Burnt offerings and Skinsaw murders I'm skipping them but am more than happy to discuss them aswell. So I'm starting with Hookmountain Massacre
so far the problem minis and what I have so far for them are:

  • Named Stone Giant during the raid,(regular stone giant but giving him a goofy tabbard to tell him apart...)
  • Taiga Giant,(Just a random huge giant)
  • Death Webs,(?)
  • Rocs,(?)
  • Mammoths,(?)
  • Lamias,(Snow Maiden from Mage Knight)
  • Shining Child,(burning skeletons) and
  • Hounds of Tindalos,(im thinking ddm kruthiks...)

More to come! also opinions and ideas welcome!

There are so few Stone Giant miniatures on the market that I think Reaper really needs to do a sculpt for Mokmurian. It'd just be nice to have some more Stone Giants.

There are lots of threads on this topic though. I think many of them just address specific characters/miniatures though.

  • Named Stone Giant during the raid,(regular stone giant but giving him a goofy tabbard to tell him apart...) DDM has at least 2 stone giants, and reaper has at least 1, maybe use te DDM ones for the others and the reaper one for Mokmurian
  • Taiga Giant,(Just a random huge giant)
  • Death Webs,(?)
  • Rocs,(?) again DDM has a roc and 2 Vrocs
  • Mammoths,(?) I think I used the mammoth rider from one of the huge sets
  • Lamias,(Snow Maiden from Mage Knight)
  • Shining Child,(burning skeletons) and
  • Hounds of Tindalos,(im thinking ddm kruthiks...)

Unfortunately I haven't read all of the adventures after my own group disbanded, so not as up to date on the others (I think there's a better DDM for the hound, but can't think of what it is right now)

Sovereign Court

Paizo is selling another metal Stone Giant mini from Otherworld (I think?) minis. I don't have one so I can't be sure how well it scales to the DDM stone giants or the Reaper stone giant. I am planning on using the old Ral Partha stone giant mini for Mokmurian, as it is smaller in comparison (Mok is described as a "runt") and it is wearing a crude toga-like robe.

Reaper also makes a Lamia holding a pair of daggers, but it is out of general distribution, so if you find one, snatch it up quick! This model with some weapon swaps should do for the "lesser" lamia out there. The Matriarchs and Harridans, however.... sheesh!

Same with the Rune Giants. I'm stumped on those.

Actually the stone giant I meant was Terkatainus or whatever, the ranger raid leader. Currently I have plenty of the two types of ddm stone giants and have put identical tabards on one of each to play mok and tek...

As for the Rocs, as they are huge birds I have yet to find a suitable mini and may have to buy some toy ones or something... I haven't sen a Roc mini from DDM...

maybe I'm thinking the early Vrock...

Sovereign Court

When all else fails, go with counters. Firey Dragon has lots of nice ones.

I was going to use the DDM Stone Giant Runecarver for Teraktinus/"Terry".

Here's what I've been planning on using for Fortress of the Stone Giants:

For various named stone giants, the Death Giant from Savage Encounters (for Mokmurian), or the Marut from Underdark (for Teraktinus or Galenmir).

For the taiga giant, the Hunched Giant from Underdark. He works for Lokansir, as well.

For deathwebs, the Fiendish Huge Spider from War of the Dragon Queen. I can't decide whether to just go with huge as the actual size, or to put another base under it for gargantuan. Considering how much table space I would need to go gargantuan and make the fight reasonably fun, I'll probably just call the deathwebs huge. Alternatively, someone did paper minis for these guys that look really cool. I think they're on the "Community Created" thread.

For rocs, there's a toy company that makes plastic animals. Go to your local toy store and you can find eagles and hawks that will suit your needs. This also works for the mammoths, Embers (the huge dire bear) and, actually, huge spiders, now that I think about it.

For the lamias, the snow maiden is an excellent plan, re-based. For lamia matriarchs, I used the mini for the Maralith. Even though they have six arms, they're perfect.

Shining child I'm stumped on. I hate the burning skeleton figure, or I'd do that, too, but I just can't stand it for some reason...

For hounds of tindalos, I'm using the Ethereal Marauder. I've played Arkham Horror for years, and the Ethereal Marauder looks almost exactly like the picture that game has for their Hounds of Tindalos.

For other "No DDM minis out there" monsters, there are also redcaps and the scanderig. Happily, there's the redcaps from Dreamblade, which completely capture the spirit of this Paizo creation, replete with a ridiculously oversized axe. For the scanderig, I'm kind of stumped, again, but thought the Shield Guardian from Unhallowed gave the correct flavor, being that it's an iron golem style figure with stone fists. No "forge in its belly" but that's not too big a deal...

I'll follow with thoughts on future modules, soon.

Here's a picture of the Otherworld stone giant, together with the DDM Runecarver and Elminster for scale:

Do note that the Otherworld giant (left) stands on a higher base AND is positioned on some cork cliffs to come closer in height to the Runecarver.
Hope that helps anyone considering some stone giant shopping.

I just looked through my list of "wants" for Sins of the Saviors, and I think everything has a mini that has been made at one point or another (including the recently release Scribbler by Reaper). Every monster has been released for D&D Minis at some point, and all of the named bad guys are PC classes, so Reaper has the best options for them all (with the occasional stellar DDM player mini).

The only exception is the Shemhazian. The only idea I have for this is the Goristro from Legendary Evils. Again, it's only huge, but as there are no gargantuan minis outside the Iconics line (hello, Orcus...), it seems to be the only good option. As much as I'd love to have this combat involve a gargantuan figure, I think I'm just going to allow it to have all its abilities as a huge.

Thoughts?

Currently I am trying to trade for what I can and save as much cash as possible so there is that. I have been checking the local dollar stores for properly sized animals of the types I need but no go so far... May have to look online. Also I've taken to making my own paper minis which have went over so far...
