I actually need to applaud the Pathfinder writing crew for, so far, doing an excellent job on explaining how to pronounce most things in the world. Rise of the Runelords has been particularly great in this regard. I'm also thrilled at how much of this has transferred over to the community wiki. That said, I haven't been able to find a good answer on Cheliax.
Some options my group has thrown out:
The intuitive "Chel-ee-axe,"
The exotic "Shel-ee-uh,"
And something that sounds like shellac from one particularly tired player. Also, the ubiquitous chillaxin' joke has made an appearance.
So, gentlemen, what's the proper way to pronounce Cheliax?

As a FYI they are coming out with a new one this fall. I think they still have copies of the old one left. But thought I would point that out.

Here at Paizo we pronounce it:
CHEL ee ax
Rhymes with HELL me axe.
The word istelf was originally inspired by a particularly dull vacation to Lake Chelan by a young Erik Mona, I believe.
A vacation that inspired a nation of devil worshipers sounds anything but dull. :) Just saying.

Hmm. I think I saw a post somewhere saying that Appendix B (pronunciation) may be cut from the revised Campaign Setting for space reasons although it might make it into a web enhancement if Paizo have the time and resources to create one. :-?
In any case the pdf of the current edition Campaign Setting is still available on the Paizo site, even if local games stores have sold out.

Well... I believe that Erik's perception of that vacation as being so deadly dreary dull that it was hellish to visit. (Shrug) Who knows how publishers think?

The current pagination of the revised campaign setting does indeed cut the 2 pages of pronunciations. I'm kinda torn on whether to put it back in or not, but I suspect it's best to put up as a web enhancement rather than take up two pages of a book that would be better suited to giving two more pages of Golarion-specific feats, magic items, equipment, or spells (which is what would likely be cut to make room for those two pages).

I say go web enhancement for this one simple reason. Eventually you will expand the world setting and add things. It would be nice to have a single doc with all of that collected in one spot. Than one in the back of each World campaign region book.

True... but it's actually pretty complex and difficult for us to organically add to a PDF. More complex than it probably should be.

I will just have to take your word for that. Still i think it would be better for us your fans to do it that way. :)

I could write on and on about how we pronounce it in our weekly gaming group - but none of you folks here would get it, since I'm german.
The beginning sound, the combination "CH" is pronounced like the "CH" in Rammstein's "Ich will" (go search the Interwebs for a version of that song).
And that's just the beginning of it, so I won't bother you with a fullblown essay on the subject.
Suffice to say - it's hard to pronounce for native english speakers.

And the fact that folks seem okay with coming up with their own pronunciations further convinces me that dedicating 2 pages of the World Guide to this topic is wasteful.
It absolutely is, but I really hope you guys and gals don't give up on the Web Enhancement idea, which is both awesome and really customer-centric.
On a side note, I know you all hear about what a great company you have every day from various sources, but, well...
You have a great company on your hands. It must be great to work for Paizo.

Having taken German diction classes in College as a vocal minor, I can see how this would be a fun word to say in German.

to true, I'd rather see character traits get in, with the big word OPTIONAL over it. but thats not likely to happen, so I agree with your earlier post that says more feats and stuff.
I love more feats and stuff.

Character traits are already going into print in a hardcover. They're in the Advanced Player's Guide.

So, gentlemen, what's the proper way to pronounce Cheliax?
It's not the "official" way to say it but I have done it enough where everyone of my players now does it this way.
I pronounce it the same way in the Campaign Setting. However, I hold up an ASL Letter "C" , and say it in a sing-song way like this
Only the most badass way to say the most badass nation at my table...

I'm a pretty dedicated fan all around, but I'll admit to 'Cheliax' being one of those rare words that I don't even like to say out loud. It is right up there with 'soliloquy' for me. No offense to Mr. Mona, but it is the one thing in this game that I've tried to pronounce in various ways that weren't as grating, but either found alternate pronunciations just as annoying or so unintuitive that my players will be looking at me like I'm having a stroke. I had an exchange with a player about it that went like this:
Me: ...so the base human population there is largely...Shay-lax-ian...Shaylish...
Player, grinning: You wanna just call it 'Smithland' or something?
Me, laughing: I'm tryin like hell, man... the sound of it just... you know what I mean?
Player: Yeah. I mean, I don't like the sound of it, sure. I'm not gonna have a seizure, but yeah.
Anyway, I'm doing pretty good if that's my biggest complaint with a campaign world, but...just needed to get that out, thanks:)

Think of the "ch" in Cheliax as the same sound at the start of the word "choke" or "cheat".
Then just add that sound to the letter L and you've got the first syllable.
Then just add the letter E and then the word axe.
Presto!
Yeah easy to say or I thought so, but it makes me think of Jelleo axe... and thats wrong. Though Jello is evil so maybe it's right.

See, Little Tim? That's the naughty man daddy told you about! He's the reason why daddy is still being persecuted... eh, you know him? What did you say? He did *WHAT*? Oh, poor Tim... hasn't daddy said many times that you must not give your flaming whip to weird-looking strangers? Don't worry -- daddy won't let him near you again!

It would totally be a waste of space... James, you really think the Andoran pumpkin-heads can *read*? Or that those Taldorian dandies bother to read books instead of powdering their wigs? Besides, there is only *ONE* true way to pronounce the name of our glorious nation; it's how *WE* do it. And that cannot be taught to people with inferior mental capabilities, i.e. non-Chelaxians. ;P

Pish-posh, you sulfur scented imp licker. Every time I hear someone utter your nation's name I feel I should offer them a handkerchief.
*powders his wig*

Hey, if you don't want your son's flaming whip tied into the shape of a rude sign, then don't let him out without supervision.
I think the Inquisition will want to know why your whip is arranged to depict *that*, as a flaming rune, on the palace roof. Nice touch, engraving the whip handle, by the way!
