Unseat vs. unmounted opponents?

Rules Questions

What is the ruling on using Unseat against an unmounted opponent? Would I still get the free Bull Rush attempt? Assume I have the pre-req feats plus Ride-by-Attack and Spirited Charge feats. Thanks for your input.

I don't think a successful attempt has any effect on an unmounted opponent other than doing damage normally; he can't be "knocked of his horse" or be "prone in a space adjacent to his mount" if he doesn't have a horse or a mount.

At that point it sounds like you're trying to trample.

I was envisioning a footman getting hit by a knight charging on his horse with a lance. I imagine if it didn't kill the footman outright it would knock him to the ground because of the angle of the attack.
