That's what I would have guessed. Where is it pointed out as Varnhold being east without doubt?

Stolen Lands page 13:
Nomen Heights: The centaurs of the Nomen Heights
have always been trouble, and in an attempt at a show
of force, the swordlords sent a group of mercenaries led
by one of their own, a low-ranking but eager-to-impress
swordlord named Maegar Varn to establish a town and
make peace with the Nomen centaurs.

Conclusion:
The swordlord named Varn was sent into the Nomen Heights, which lay east of the Kamelands, and established Varnhold. Also, the areas in the east, the Hooktongue Slough and the Glenebon Uplands, are covered by the other groups sent out by Brevoy (same page as above).

It's the nearest to Iobaria, alot of the stuff there is tied to greater Casmaron, that in itself implies east, and all that is from the staff and first book. Doesn't the player's guide say?
Either way, it is definately, without a doubt, east. Southeast-ish to be really precise as the top of the hex maps are not north.
