"Benefit: You gain a +1 trait bonus on attack of opportunity attack rolls made with daggers, swords, and similar bladed weapons."
Seems like rapier would fit, but does "similar bladed weapon" reference the slashing-type? Then again dagger is P/S...
I'd OK this in my game, but is it legal for society play?
Thx
Tom

A rapier IS a sword. It is actually the most appropriate weapon to use this trait wit has it is the classic fencing weapon. It is inconcievable to me how a rapier would not count as a 'sword' for the purposes of something called 'fencing'.

That's probably why he's asking, as this trait not including rapiers would make no sense.
Personally, I think that they should have included 'rapier' as an example, just in case...| Abraham spalding |
Here is how I would answer that question as a DM:
"Is it a weapon?"
"Is it bladed?"
"Is it similiar to a sword or dagger?"
If the answer is yes in all three cases you can use that weapon with that trait. In the case of a rapier the answer is yes in all three cases (indeed the rapier is a type of sword) so you could use it.

This. As soon as I saw the title of the post, I was curious, because in my mind when you play word association, and someone says "Fencing", the first word to come to mind IS "Rapier".

*listens to the sound of something whooshing over MultiClassClown's head*
Chain-link was a word association reference to fencing, not rapier. :)

Yeah, I got it. The comment was intentionally obtuse. Sorry, was my tongue not visible in my cheek?

That's what I thought too, then I had this whole conversation with myself about Piercing vs Slashing and "similar" bladed weapons...
Rapiers are bladed weapons. They are just balanced for stabbing.
Rapiers I've seen IRL have been pointed but not edged, but I guess those were, in fact, foils?
Charge!

I see what you are saying but i think you are overthinking it.
The word "rapier" generally refers to a relatively long-bladed sword characterized by a complex hilt which is constructed to provide protection for the hand wielding it...
Sometimes its best to just use the english language, the designers certainly do, because if they literally spelled everything out directly we wouldnt be able to physically carry the rulebooks.
