Multiple Summon Monster Spells

Rules Questions

The Exchange

I've been trying to figure this out by reading the book and checking the forums, but I can't seem to find the answer. (feel free to point at the blatantly obvious text I've missed if that's the case)

Can I have two summon monster spells active at the same time as a wizard? I wouldn't think I could have two Summon Monster V's going at once, but what about SM IV and V at the same time?

On a somewhat related note, if I were a Mystic Theurge, could I have a divine summon monster spell and an arcane summon monster spell active at the same time?

The only thing limiting the number of summon spells you can have active at the same time is the short duration (1 round/level).

I am unaware of any rule that limits your monster summoning. You can have a dozens of summon monster spells all active at the same time if you're high enough level. Whip them up with Extend Spell (especially if you can use the metamagic rods and not have to blow higher level slots) and those spells last longer.

And yes, you can have two (or more) of the same level going simultaneously.

Also yes to the Mystic Theurge spell.

Now that I've said all that, I'm waiting for someone to come in here and drop some rule that I missed, or some errata on some thread somewhere - but I'm fairly confident no such limitation exists.

No actual rule preventing it, just plain old logistics.
It costs a full round to use the spell, and the critter you are summoning doesn't show up until the beginning of your next turn anyway. Hopefully you have a way to prevent your foes from getting to you, because if I'm a monster with more then 10 intelligence, I'm prolly gonna figure out that the gestures that funny lookin' guy is making is why these, say, fiendish wolverines are showing up in my business.
In addition, spending more then one or two summonings on a combat probably won't be necessary in the lower levels. Higher level fights might require it, but anything lower then a, say, CR 7 encounter probably won't need more then that if the rest of your party is backing you up.

Ages ago in 3.5 I worked up a plan for my higher level wizard to sow chaos in the local slave markets by repeatedly casting Summon Monster spells to get a small army of celestial monkies, then let them loose. But alas, Pathfinder has removed the monkey from the list...

Anyway, it's like having Mage Armor and Shield spells active. Unless the text says otherwise, cast away.

There is no restriction on the summon monster spell. You can cast as many as you can cast (either have prepared or if you are spontaneous, however many spell slots you have).

The summoner class has a restriction of its summon monster spell like ability to 1 at a time, but that does not apply to any other class.

Check out Mad Monkeys it's a beautiful spell made specifically for this. It's in Ultimate Magic and is a 3rd lvl spell :)

That is true, and this may be the restriction you are recalling.

The creatures summoned using this spell-like ability also can't be used while the eidolon is active, or vice versa.

However, if the Summoner were to use their spell slots, or scrolls, or wands, to cast one of the Summon Monster spells, these are subject to the normal rules, and could be done multiple times, to fill an area with multiple simultaneous creatures.
And these new creatures could be summoned via spell, while they already have a creature present via the Spell-Like Ability.
The creatures summoned via spell would only stick around for the normal duration (not the minutes that the SLA lasts), so it's not something I'd expect to see very often, except in emergencies.
