'Leaving for camping today.

M orc Paladin / 1

I don't mind taking over while some people are out for awhile. I can at least run the game enough to get the party out of town and treking through the frozen wastes, some random encounters, and some XP... even without knowing TMI we can get to a better point for the current DM to go from, I am assuming that killing a few orcs or what not will not ruin the current DMs plans ;)

Or hellefire can take over for a bit, does not matter to me!

Yeah home internet is back up. I'm taking monday and tuesday and maybe wednesday off next week, so I'll have lots of time to get things together. In the meantime (meaning this weekend) everyone wrap up what they are doing and go through some fluff - talking, planning, etc. I'll post some necessary info this weekend as well, and kick off the trip out of town sunday night/monday morning (I'm in Scotland, so thats sunday afternoon to late night u.s. time).

I haven't done play-by-post in a long time (last time I did it, was on BBSes in the 90s), so might be a bit getting into the swing of it. A few things while it's my turn in the DM chair...

1. Post when you can normally - combats will be reserved for weekdays when it seems more people can post regularly. During combat, I like to get a round or two done a day - if you're going to be gone cqamping or such let me know, and let me know if you're basically afk during that time or want me/another to run you. If no one is running you or you don't post at least daily, you miss the combat round or two during that day.

2. We've been good about keeping it in character. I like that. Not a requirement at all, but I like it :).

3. I Love table top gaming, including face to face talking and rolling of dice. Unfortunately, this is not quite that, but what we can do from across the world. Anyway, I understand the desire for rolling real dice, but for the moment do me a favor and use the system-supplied dice. I'd like to move past that eventually, but for now while I'm learning the software, etc.

I think that's all. I'll try to add some meat to the world also - everyone feel free to do that.

Helle

I'm back from camping :). It was miserable... well, Pacific Northwest weather is like that.

K waits for the others, feeling slightly impatient.

M Half-Orc Rogue 1

Gnosh arrives with the supplies he's managed to scrounge together (a few days rations for each) and asks, "So, being new in town, what're the mountains like? I only know a bit of the southern pass, and what's between here and Crescent Harbor. Anyone traveled further north?"

"I have. The pass, were I'm sure we're headed if the feathered ones aren't insane, is the only reliable route to the tundra to the north this time of year. The Frostlands themselves are generally cold and disagreeable, though the stars are brilliant. I hope you brought a thick bedroll."

M orc Paladin / 1

"Bah one places as good or as bad as another"

"Mah concerns are fer stayin warm enough fer stayin alive"

Rector draws back, but his eyes are already about as dilated in fear as they can get. As I told these fine gentlemen, I found it in the bottom of a crevice, a shifting crevice which one of my men fell in to, near Ice Tongue Pass. I stole from no one.

He leans closer to you and whispers if you can retrieve the parts, I would be willing to pay your expenses and give you...10% of the profit to split among you. If you are going to go after it, go to my house, speak with my servant Thomas and give him the password 'Armstrong 6'. He will give you some supplies.

The scion who had been interrogating Rector when you approached, and had leaned back to watch your technique, now leans back in and hisses enough - get thee gone, for I have more questions for the fine Rector. The scion guards move forward, forcing you to back away or resort to force.

*****************************************************************

Tully snorts at Gnosh. If I thought you believed that, I would consider you a fool. As it is, I simply consider you naive. Not with the Rector, with me. Some of those others going out with you - they are good customers. See that they get their share of this. And. Don't. Try me. On this. Tully disappears into the back room for a few minutes, returning with a few parcels of dried meats, cheeses and other foodstuffs, as well as a couple bottles and a couple small casks. All of this disappears into a large sack. Good journeys. And again, see that these are spread evenly.

{ooc}Sorry I was a bit late on those - feel free to have another day finishing up what you are doing in town. AS a note - I am from Alaska, born and raised. The 'official' 3.5/Pathfinder rules on cold weather are....written by people from temperate climates. Otherwise half of Alaska would have frozen to death by now. That being said, if something specific occurs (extremely high altitudes, ice storm, some event) there may be some issues - beyond that if you have basic cold weather clothes and bedroll, you will be fine.

M orc Paladin / 1

"I fear not tha cold fer my hairy hide keeps me, alas fer those with less hair, I fear tha bitter winds fer there sakes"

K shoots Fubar an amused look.

Female Half elf Witch 1

Sioned regards the Rector with a cold eye for a few moments and then turns, walking off towards his house to deal with Thomas the servant.

Over her shoulder "We'll settle this mess and if we find trinkets while doing so, you can decide what they are worth to you when we return."

Pulling herself and Rusty back into her cloak, Sioned finds herself at the Rector's door and kicks it with her foot.

"I've been sent by Covaut for supplies...Armstrong 6." She calls to the closed door.

Sioned hears a clatter as a window above her is drawn open. There is a small grunt, and she jumps to the side just as a jumble of bags is dropped next to her and the window quickly drawn closed.

There appear to be 7 bags, 6 small and one large, tied together with small lengths of rope. Each of the 6 small bags contains a fur-lined cloak, a cold weather bedroll, 6 days of rations, a wineskin, a small cooking pot, flint and steel, and a small metal flask (smelling strongly of spirits if opened). The large bag contains two lined tents, each for 3 people, and two cold-weather blankets/ground mats. It also contains 100' of hemp rope and crampons, ice picks and various other climbing gear.

All of the gear is etched/branded with Covaut's personal and households symbols.

Any further knocking or shouting is met with silence.

M Half-Orc Rogue 1

Gnosh gives Tully a wink and a smile, "I'll see to it. Be back soon, with coin!"

He catches up to the others outside the Scion's tower as quickly as possible. When he sees the gear that Sioned brings from the Rectors house, he grunts in surprise. "Good haul, there. Looks like it was still packed from the last expedition." He divides the rations he got from Tully into the sacks from the Rector's house, then picks up one of the smaller sacks. Looking at the fur-lined cloak, he shrugs it over his shoulders on top of the one he is already wearing. Grunting under the weight of the sack, he shakes his head at the weight, then sets it down and looks at the others. "How long until dawn? We could set out then or now, if it will be close enough."

Male Human Cleric3

Well, it isn't the dead of winter yet, but dawn is still a good couple hours away - unfortunately, we're not going to be able to restrict ourselves to daytime activities if we have any chance of succeeding. I say we stick to the trail and head out now, assuming everyone is accounted for and ready.

Ahz accepts his bag from Rector as well as his few belongings left at the inn from Sioned and readies to go. When she throws him his coin purse, still with the same few coins in it, he raises an eyebrow momentarily, then returns to his preparations.

Is this everyone and are we all ready?

M orc Paladin / 1

"Aye ready an willin"

Fubar shoulders the large bag

"We should pack this up innan better way, cannot have both tents goin over tha side o' the mountain with meself"

just need to figure out who packs what, and adjust inventory, including any empty sacks

Female Half elf Witch 1

She bundles herself into an additional cloak and puts Rusty down to walk as she shoulders her bedroll and share of the supplies. Rusty is dressed in a matching home-made sweater and hat all knit out of multi-colored wool. He manages to look pathetic, embarrassed and a little put out all at the same time.

"I'm as ready as I ever will be. Just tell me where to go."

Sioned is a stick and likely not of much use in the carrying of tents and such.

M orc Paladin / 1

Fubar regards Sioned and Rusty for a few seconds

"Im fer hopin that ther be not such fineries as yerselfves wear in these bags fer meself. Ima not used to such things"

Fubar tries hard to hide a small smile

Female Half elf Witch 1

"As long as you carry my tent and don't let me fall into any ice cracks...I promise not to knit you a hat."

She grins and adjusts the supplies on her shoulder.

K adjusts her traveling pack slightly, all that she plans to bring along. "Accounted for and ready," she absently tells the cleric, scanning the path ahead. "And seeing how well you tracked the bird-men not far back, is it going to be me or you who leads this expedition?" She will help carry anything that is left over in the way of supplies, but she'll prefer to keep to leading or scouting.

M orc Paladin / 1

"Perchance Gnosh can carry tha other tent."

"Ima fearin tah hand my large sack tah anyone as it is heavy!"

I guess we are ready to go!

Male Human Cleric3

I hate to say it, but with this metal armor and such, I am about loaded down to capacity - I can carry a grand total of about another ration before I become a hinderance. It is ok with me - I can find some food along the way, but if the rest of you would like to share out the rest of this food, or we can leave it in town...

Ahz smiles at Caydee. Well, K, I'll track, you lead - my brain is about fried for ideas, so...I'll just track and keep you out of trouble when I can. Wish I had time to find out more about these bird religions before we left - but we can just talk to our bird friends about it when we find them. Any help tracking would be great too.

Ahz shoulders his pack and returns to tracking out of the city.

Survival Check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19

{ooc}Again, I have not done this in a long time (play-by-post) and I have never done it sharing DM duties. I would suggest that possibly DM switch is a good time to hand out some xp, from the DM of that session? Any other thoughts? Heaven? Also, I am guessing we are going at the medium/moderate/middle level progression?

Helle

Female Half elf Witch 1

{ooc}Between DM's sounds like a plan to me. I haven't ever done PbP before so I don't know what the advancement rate is like. I am assuming pretty slow. The fast rate might work better or we just accept that we will be first level for 9 or 10 months :){ooc}

Works for me.

Caydee travels at the head of the procession, aiding Ahz in tracking when she can, her eyesight compensating for the dark of night.

survival check 1d20(18)+7=25

LG male human [taldan] paladin of Shelyn 1 [AC 18/12/16; hp 1/10]

Sounds like a plan to me as well; sadly even with the fast progression advancement will likely be slow. Oh well.

First chapter comes to a total of 300 xp each.

As the group begins to head north out of town, you notice a figure running up the street from the Elf in your direction. Andreas is outfitted in heavy winter clothing and a traveling pack. If I had been any longer, I never would have found you in this dark; thank the Rose there was enough moonlight to see you on the trail. From what you told me earlier it would seem the best way to stay warm in the coming days is to take a walk through the Icewalls, rather than wait in town for the winter frosts to cover everything. Care for another hand on your trip through the mountains?

Andreas' is loaded with all his gear, save his artisan's tools. He left both dogs at the Bearded Elf with Tully; he also tried to convince the innkeeper to part with some food for the trip, but I would imagine she scolded him for asking for more than she'd already provided.

Current load is 73.5 lbs, and I can take another 42.5 lbs before suffering from a heavy load; Andreas' frame is slight, but everyone can tell he's carrying his current load with relative ease.

Caydee's eyes and skills are helping immensely as she picks up the trail heading north and slightly west.

Male Human Cleric3

Ahz ponders a moment. In the last day, I have seen that religious fanatics exist in more than just humanoid cultures.
{ooc}This is a set up for when my turn at the helm is nearing an end - I tend to ask at the end of a gaming session 'What did you learn?' It is generally meant to help you think about the highlights of the session and point out something that struck your character as important - it can be a moral point or a humorous point or just something that occurred to them.

Ahz loses the misty look in his eyes and looks up to see Andreas approaching. Ah, glad you could make it. Hm, you have fairly broad shoulders there - if you don't mind could you give a hand with maybe one of the tents, and a bit of the communal food? Ahz smiles broadly, slides his extra gear and food from the Rector and one of the tents into a large sack and offers it to Andreas.

Just hope he accepts... :)

M orc Paladin / 1

"Glad I am tah see another strong back tah carry this other tent! I was saying afor that ifin I goes over tha mount with both tents on my back."

"With this darkness comin bout us, and the cold methinks tha one with heat vision should lead an protect tha rear."

"Any who wants tah stand at me side can an I will bring out my shield to defend them, or I will jus keep a mighty weapon in both o my hands..."

Looks around to see if any take the offer!

M Half-Orc Rogue 1

Gnosh steps over and picks up the other tent, putting the loose bits in his sack and using the poles to hold it over his shoulder. "Fair weight, that... But it'll go in the snow at first sign of trouble. Hope no one minds their tent being a touch damp." He looks around at the group, nods, and steps in place a bit behind Caydee.

In terms of marching order: While outside, Gnosh will take a place somewhere in the middle of the group and have a hand on a dagger. When indoors, he will move further up to help scan for traps.

M orc Paladin / 1

Fubar will move to the area behind the ranger and stay far enough back to let the ranger do rangering, but close enought to come and hit if something happens (about 10-15 foot) interval (distance)

I am seeing Ahz and Caydee in the front for certain.

I am not sure where anyone else is.

It might be better for Sioned and Rusty stay center and Fubar and Gnosh to take the rear guard.

With about 15 feet between each pair.

LG male human [taldan] paladin of Shelyn 1 [AC 18/12/16; hp 1/10]

Andreas nods as he accepts the offered gear, and takes a moment to secure the extra load with the rest of his equipment.

Sounds good. Andreas will try to stay forward center, so that he can protect Sioned should the need arise and move to support those in front as needed.

K flashes Andreas a distracted smile, still absorbed in her tracking and leading duties, and making sure to avoid any pitfalls in the path. Keeping her hands free while gear is still being passed around, she nevertheless can easily reach her sword if they run into any tengu, though she intends to use her bow more often. Though perfectly friendly in town, out here, she tends to become more reserved.

M orc Paladin / 1

Fubar readies his falchion and wields it in both hands

"I am ready!"

The party moves into the night. Ahz occasionally loses the trail but Caydee quickly shows him where it is. Almost 3 hours later the sun finally comes up over the Eastern crags, though it is hard to see through a moderate layer of clouds. Luck holds so far, and no fresh snow has fallen.

The Tengu seem to move lightly over the hard snow, because the crust is only scuffed and never broken. You have not seen any other living thing. Mountains rise up to the East and West, looking cold and uninviting. There are places where broken outcroppings creep almost to the middle of the pass, then the rocks recede as far as leaving a 100' wide pass. The frozen ground continues to slope slowly upward, and the coming of the sun does little to warm the air.

(Ahz and Caydee roll survival checks)
(All roll perception checks)

"Let thar be light!"

Fubar times his bold statement till the light engulfs the party

"Jus one o my many talents!"

Female Half elf Witch 1

Grins at Fubar then glances around at the frozen vista...

Perception1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

and Rusty1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

...and then goes back to staring at the snow five feet in front of her.

Perception roll for Gnosh = 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

LG male human [taldan] paladin of Shelyn 1 [AC 18/12/16; hp 1/10]

Andreas grins at Fubar's remarks. And thankful for the light I am; I don't care for stumbling through mountain passes in the dark, even with exceptional guides.

  • Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Fubar - use the internal dice rolling system please = type:

    M orc Paladin / 1

    1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

    M orc Paladin / 1

Ok I think I got that!
    Perception check as above

{ooc}Mostly I think I will make my rolls using the dice command here, at least for now. I may change that later, and certainly will make some rolls in secret, but for now...I will put them in spoilers. Feel free to look at them if you want to. Also, Caydee, and anyone else not yet, please use the dice function for rolling. Thanks!

    Dice Rolls and Such:

    Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
And going by marching order of Ahz, KD, Andreas, Sioned, Gnosh, Fubar (as close as I can tell from various posts):
    #1: 1d6 ⇒ 1
    #2: 1d6 ⇒ 4

    Andreas:

You had glanced back to smile at Fubar, and as you turn your head back around you catch a shadow leaping toward Sioned out of the corner of your eye. As you whip back around you see another shadow leaping toward Ahz out of the corner of your other eye. You are very close to Sioned, but a bit away from Ahz, who is leaning down to examine a track in the snow crust. You realize the shadows are wolves, leaping from behind/on top of an outcropping of rock that is jutting into the pass. You have time for a quick reaction.

{ooc}It is surprise round and you have time for a standard action (as well as free action, etc as normal). I do not recall you mentioning having your weapon drawn, but will allow you to make the call if you have it out or not this time, as some of the party did state they have their weapons out. Be sure to specify in advance in the future though :).

Everyone else: The light coming up will help with the tracking. The chill breeze is a bit annoying, and some warmth would be nice - but is not likely to come soon.

LG male human [taldan] paladin of Shelyn 1 [AC 18/12/16; hp 1/10]

Eyes up, wolves! Andreas calls a warning to Ahz as he swings his glaive into an attack posture and moves to intercept a large canine form bearing down on Sioned.

    Spoiler:
Sorry about the oversight. I didn't think to mention having my weapon ready because polearms are always at the ready; the weapons are carried in one hand during travel, usually resting on one's shoulder if you are mounted. Due to their size they simply can't be sheathed, and though they could be secured to a pack, for a game like Pathfinder it's impractical; when one can be attacked by anything, anywhere, why intentionally put your weapon in a position where it cannot be retrieved easily.

If close enough to Sioned, I'll use a 5-foot step to maneuver into a better position and Ready an attack on the wolf when it comes into range. If not close enough, I'll instead move to place myself in the creature's path, preventing a charge and hopefully spoiling its aim.

    Melee Attack, Glaive (if needed)

  • Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
  • Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

  • Female Half elf Witch 1

Looks around wide eyed and startled at Ahz's cry and his sudden leap to action. She only catches sight of the wolf at the last moment and has no time to react before it attempts to charge into her.
