The Core Rulebook says that the spell Locate Creature cannot be blocked by anything except running water. Does running water only mean rivers? What about a sea? Can you sense the direction of someone aboard a ship?
Besides: Does anyone know a spell that would actually protect you against being sensed via this spell?

first, from spell description:
"It cannot detect objects. It can be fooled by mislead, nondetection, and polymorph spells."a reasonable GM would likely permit anything that blocks divination (scrying) from also blocking locate object/creature. though some (like mage's private sanctum) are quite overt themselves (being a big opaque semi-circle).
i would say an ocean would equal a river in this case
