Witches in King Maker

Kingmaker

I'm going to use a spoiler tag to talk about this in case some of my player wander across this thread, as I don't want to ruin one of the characters back story, also revealing info about the King Maker hidden stuff, so don't read unless you don't have anything to spoil. But my question is about Witches and the being behind the familar that empowers them in the King Maker setting in particular.

Witch Example:
Okay, I have a player who is doing an older sailor who sailed the seas, living a somewhat happy if solitary life. One day storm catches him off guard dumps him into the ocean he starts to drown. He's approached by something from the depths of the ocean and offered a choice, live and accept the power, or die now. He accepts, and finds himself back on shore after the storm has passed, with an old battered Cauldron with an Octopus swimming in it(His familiar). Since then he has been lead further and further inland making his way to brevoy where he did a fortune reading for a young man where it was revealed to him to travel with him, on the King Maker adventure.

Now all that being said, I'm trying to determine what this power in the sea was that is basically funding my adventure with his magical powers. I'm thinking since Nystta (however you spell it) the evil Fey is one of the driving forces it might be some Fey force in opposition to her? What sort of deep ocean Fey might I draw on to be the witch backer? Though I'm open to other ideas.

I've also thought about adding a coven of witches living in the green belt that he might eventually ally himself with, but I'm not sure about how approach that, any suggestions there?

Well my first question is how important is it and how likely is it, that the PC will ever find out exactly what it is? Cause if he will never find out I would leave it vague on purpose and just make up something that fits the story and not worry about it effecting the rules. You have a good idea for the source, i would just make up something interesting and go with it personally.

Kinda with Dark_Mistress on that, but you might use:

Spoiler:
Aboleths

You could just make it up. An advanced/fiendish kraken or something like that

Dark Missus might be right. You can keep it vague

Yeah, I see what your saying. And I'm leaning that way. With adding a potential coven of withes out there I was thinking I would want to flesh out the motivation a bit. But I suppose just knowing they are in opposition to what is going on over there would do, and potentially worry about it if the character starts trying to research where the power comes from.

It can only be old squid face himself - the Great Cthulhu!

how about a coven of kraken witches?

I was going to say Dagon, but this is ultimately better.

Or perhaps you could have it be some mysterious figure like "the Sea King" from the Fafhrd and Gray Mouser tales. Better yet - a sorcerous concubine of the Sea King!

The ancient mariner of Coleridge encountered Death and "Night-mare Life-in-Death" a pale lady who seems to personify unnatural undeath. This lady is the one who curses the man by "freeing" him of Death's grasp by winning him in a game of chance.

She'd be a great empowering force, IMO.

Sounds vaguely like Hanspur might suit you. He's a forbidden god of the River Kingdoms region in the campaign setting book. His domains are Chaos, Death, Travel and Water.

You guys have given me some good ideas. Thanks for the help.

I'll second this. I was thinking of Hanspur when I read your initial post, Talbane. Maybe Hanspur lured him in from the open waters to his domain of "roads" that feed into the ocean.

Then again, I've had Hanspur on the brain since reading his bit in the "Guide to the River Kingdoms." I'll be DMing this one if we play it, but have a character stuck in my head that won't go away that sounds so much like your Witch: a river-traveler saved from drowning by Hanspur's intervention, now a Cleric with the Tomb-Tainted Soul feat who channels negative energy. Might have to make him an NPC!

Well I hadn't expected to have much of a focus on Witches in my game, but given I have not one but two PCs multiclassing into the class at 2nd level, I've decided to make sure it isn't a dull or lame introduction. I've decided to set up a side-storyline with competing witches wrestling over the fate of the party and their eventual kingdom (a little "Macbeth," a little "Faery Queen"), the intro to which I just tossed in on my Kingmaker Journal for those who are curious.
