PFS at Gencon for non-regular PFS players

My gaming group and I want to play PFS at Gencon 2010.

What's the easiest way to produce level 12 characters that are legal for PFS play at Gencon 2010?

We don't normally play PFS games, and aren't so familiar with the rules.

In the past, we've had some bad experiences with… another organized play association where we're made to feel rather unwelcome because we don't play regularly within the "living" campaign world, and don't know the gaming association-specific rules by heart.

I realize that tends to be the attitude of a few individuals, and not the intention of any organized play assocation.

But assuming we're welcome, any help or suggestions of how to "fit in" without limiting ourselves to a low-level adventure would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Unfortunately for you, like all living games, you must start at level 1 and play all the way through 12 to participate in the level 12 scenarios. You will need to play one of the tier 1-7 scenarios at level 1 in order to participate at Gen Con unless somehow you're able to fit in enough scenarios (33 I think) to be level 12 before then.

Other than that, I've found PFS games to be fantastic and filled with great people. Hope you're still willing to join even though it's starting at a low level, it really is fun.

Thanks for the quick response!

We really like the quality of the low tier modules, and the GMs at conventions have been very good.

If we ever have time to start a PFS campaign at home, maybe we'll have a chance to play a higher-level module at Gencon in a few years… but for now, I will look for a—what's the antonym? "Disorganized play?"—game at Gencon. :-)

Thanks!

Just remember that if you play a home game in the hopes of eventually joining the rest of us schmucks in OP land, you're subject to the rules in the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, which includes the reporting of your scenarios (and I'm sure Josh will be happy if I add the phrase "on-time"). Reporting your characters is important as it is what will let you play the higher level stuff at Gen Con in years to come.

Really, we are a fun group of people though and if you have time at Gen Con, I'd suggest going and playing one Organized Play event just to see if how Paizo has done it fits your tastes a little better.

Oh, I've no doubt that PFS is a real blast to play; the modules I've bought seem very good, and everyone on the messageboards has been very friendly and helpful.

Thanks for clarifying the situation for us; you've been quite kind. :-)

Some may say that I'm mad, but...

Perhaps its time for a new set of pregenerated characters, ones appropriate for these high-level games.

I doubt that you will ever see Level 12 pre-gens. The level 12 Mods are designed to reward players that made it to the end.

I might suggest level 9 pregens to play at high level 7-11 tables, though.

There are level 7 pregens for Tier 7-11. I'm quite frankly not interested in creating higher level pregens as those levels should feel unique to the players who worked hard to achieve them. I really don't want the most dedicated players to feel like "anyone" can jump into a higher-level game. :-)

Hmm. Problem there is that those players can jump into those games anyway, and force problems with the APL, by showing up at a table with only high level characters. "Play Play Play." On the other hand, level 7 is the maximum for the Tier 1-7 adventures.

Obviously this is mostly a convention issue, as game days and private games have a greater degree of control over who shows up. And I don't really know how to resolve it either, or how much of an edge case it might be.
