D&D 4E Pantheon converted for Pathfinder RPG

Conversions

I am planning on using the D&D 4E Pantheon in my own Pathfinder games, as both the GM and players are familiar with this pantheon from our 4E game, and we have no attachment/preference for the D&D 3.5 Pantheon and I see no need to start from scratch so this will be ok for the campaign.

From searching the general archives I found this thread on the matter:
4E PANTHEON CONVERTED FOR PFRPG

The last post was around June 2009 and the thread has been locked. Has there been any more recent post on this subject (or perhaps in a different sub-forum)?

If not, I will be using David Fryers initial post as a starting point for my own post (as soon as I can figure out what his table means and update it with my own input).

Hi. I just came to tell you how I hate 4e and how I think that the Pathfinder Chronicles pantheon is much better than the 4e one.

Oh, and tell you what the table means, using Kord as an example:

Kord Chaotic Neutral Battle, Competition, Storms, Thunder Chaos, Glory, Strength, War, Weather Greatsword

The first word or words are the deity name, in this case Kord

Then you have the god's alignment, here Chaotic Neutral

After that, you have the god's area of concern, separated by commas, here Battle, Competition, Storms, Thunder

Directly after, separated by a blank, are the domains, in our example Chaos, Glory, Strength, War, Weather

The final entry is the deity's favoured weapon, in this case Greatsword

That's the basic information for deities including and the relevant data a cleric needs or will find useful.

Why exactly would you want to convert 4E pantheon, when there already is a 3E 'almost' converted one?

I don't think it would be too difficult to learn the patheon native to pathfinder (and you would be better off), unless it is an issue of buying new reference material. So the question may be how to obtain this type of information so you can make a decision.

As to 4E pantheon, and how they treat dieties, races, classes, etc. I do not know of any easy conversions, beyond just using the fluff provided by 4E and map it to the pathfinder equivalent.

In other words, the pantheons provided by 4E or pathfinder are suitable for the the systems they support, so I would recommend keeping them seperate.

But maybe you will get lucky and someone has done the work for you.

So, let me see if I have this straight... you have a group of players that is willing to learn the Pathfinder gaming system but you think they will balk at reading through the deity fluff material that takes up all of a couple of pages in the PF rulebook?

Maybe I'm missing something but color me perplexed.

It may be just that they enjoy the deities in the standard 4e pantheon and they just don't think changing would be in their best interest.

As for the formatting in David Fryer's post.

It goes something like

'Deity Name' 'Deity Alignment' 'Area of Interest', 'Area of Interest', 'Area of Interest', 'Area of Interest' 'Domain', 'Domain', 'Domain', 'Domain', 'Domain' 'Favored Weapon'

Liberty's Edge

I think you're all missing the REAL point that should be discussed.

There's only about a half dozen deities that were created especially for 4E. All the others already existed in previous editions.

Maybe the original poster and his group LIKE the 4th Edition Pantheon. Sometimes fluff like that is really important to a group's core identity. I've been in some groups that really liked Dragonlance fluff, but used Forgotten Realms PrCs and stuff.

Anyways, I think the Raven Queen deity sounds really interesting, but I've been unable to find much written about her. I don't have the 4th edition materials. I REALLY like the Pathfinder system, even if I know squat about Golarian and its deities. I usually play in homebrew campaigns....and the last few haven't featured any clerics, so religion hasn't been that important. (Don't worry, we have healers, druids, bards, dragon shamans, paladins, and ranger/swashbucklers and sorcerers with UMD, so we're OK healing-wise!)

Thanks for all responses so far, now on to each of your points:

KaeYoss:
-I am not a fan of 4E either, I find that in their quest to make the game more “fun”, “balanced”, “faster” and “cooler” they streamlined, simplified, cookie-cutter and stripped the game of many things that made playing D&D for me fun. And like many here, I have been playing this game from the original Red Box rules and gone threw all the rules updates, and I found D&D 3.5 the best and stable of the lot. (Pathfinder refines and polishes it better, but at its core it is still 3.5)

Also, I have been running D&D games for 10-15 years in different rules and campaign settings, and last year was the first real break I had to get from out of the DMs screen and participate in a D&D game as a player in over a decade! Sucks it had to be 4E, but a chance to play again with my friends was worth it. And to be honest, even though I am not fond of the rules, I am having fun (thanks to a new but promising GM and my friends).

-As for the Pathfinder Chronicles Pantheon I have no doubt it is good, but lacking all pathfinder books except the core book and the bestiary, I don’t have much info to go on.

-Thanks for helping me read the text; I copy, pasted and edited it on an excel sheet and now I can read it better.

Zmar:
-Because given a choice between using the core 3.5 and the core 4.0 pantheon as a “generic pantheon” , and that fact the DM or the players have never used either before, I actually like the 4E one better. And, as we are all ready using that Pantheon in the 4E game we are playing now, it keeps things simple for the next game.

Uchawi:
-The only info for the Pathfinder Chronicles that I find in the core book is on page 43, Table 3-6 Deities of the Pathfinder Chronicles. Unless I missed another section of the book, that information is not enough to work with, without investing even MORE money in more books (and being without work for almost a year limits my options).

-You bring up a good point about pantheons and their systems, which is why I will use the 4E Pantheons as a base line (idea/concept) while using the D&D 3.5/Pathfinder rules to actually make it work for my game.

Stormraven:
-My players have already know the (basic) D&D 3.5 rules, and I am the one introducing Pathfinder to them, and from their perspective it’s the same thing.

-When you say “deity fluff material that takes up all of a couple of pages in the PF rulebook?”, could you please tell me what pages you are talking about? (I might be missing that section?)

Blazej and SmiloDan:
-You are correct we enjoy the 4E Pantheon and I think it will be a good fit for our next game.

Thanks again for everyone’s feedback, I will be posting my notes as soon as I finish them.

If this is what's stopping you, might I suggest looking at the Pathfinder Wiki (linkified)?

Also, another solution is to just buy the Gods & Magic book or pdf. It is a most excellent resource.

Except that as he stated, he's been out of work for a year and can't afford to buy any more materials.

I love Gods and Magic and I know the Wiki isn't as detailed as that book, but for a person with major budget problems, it's a good stop-gap until one can afford said book.

Liberty's Edge

Sorry, missed that bit.

With so many pathfinder experts on these boards I wasn't even to hazzard a guess on what material is available to flesh out the glorian pantheon, so I was intentionally vague and defered to others.

But I never had a strong passion to carry over a pantheon into a new world, as new worlds offer new interests, so I just suck it up and make the plunge.

Fluff items like feywild, far realm, etc. are concepts that could be easily applied to other systems, as long as you remain general in concept. The same could be stated for pantheons because dieties hold many faces depending on who worships them.

Here is my first attempt at converting, revising and updating the D&D 4E Pantheon with Pathfinder domains, and expanded portfolios. Comments welcomed.

Sorry about the format, I couldn't figure out how to post a table.
