I know it will likely be a while (I'm guessing around GenCon) before Paizo will start announcing their plans for 2011, but I think it is worthy of wild speculation. What do you think Paizo should produce for the Pathfinder RPG line next year?
Clearly Bestiary 3 is an obvious choice. We can't stop until all the good OGL/d20 monsters have been converted, plus new ones are always good. I predict a Bestiary a year for at least the first 5 years. So what about the other 2 books for 2011?
Psioncs is a contriversial choice. Paizo staffers have mentioned they'd like to wait for Dreamscar's offering to be out before they make a move on that. I think that's a wise choice so I don't expect psionics to arrive before 2012, or possibly later.
Epic certainly has possibilities. I suspect they will want a little more experience with high level play, so I don't really expect this until 2012 or 2013. Which is too bad because my players will hit level 20 sometime next year. Ah well.
Divine won't happen until after epic, so 2013 or 2014.
So what does that leave for next year?
Alternate Rules A collection of variants, like Unearthed Arcana or the Book of Experimental Might. On the one hand, it might be a little early to start doing wild variants. On the other hand, there are a lot of OGL variants out there which could be compiled and updated to fit the Pathfinder RPG paradigm.
Mass Combat Always a difficult thing to integrate. Every once in a while I want to have my players leading large armies, but I've never found a good solution to this. Of course, we'll see what sort of system shows up in Kingmaker.
Monstrous PCs Expanding player races is always a popular choice. We don't have a level adjustment mechanic, and a fair number of people have been asking for it. On the other hand, our groups centaur barbarian seems to be doing just fine as it is.
Oriental Adventures has been mentioned by staffers a few times, so I think it is the most likely possibility. It doesn't take expanding on the rules very much to add a ninja, samurai (bushi), and eastern sorcerer classes (or blood lines).
Any other obvious options I am missing?

Bestiary 3: Probably
Psionics: I think they'll be around sooner than you think.
Epic: Not going to happen for a while according to some statements by Jacobs.
Divine: Not for a while either.
Alternate Rules: Too much already published and easily converted to PFRPG as it is.
Mass Combat: As much as I would like it, I highly doubt they'll hit this soon.
Monstrous PCs: This has already been handled by getting rid of ECL.
Oriental Adventures: I haven't heard the scoop that you've heard so I don't know.
I'll see if I can think of any others...

Ah, if only this had happened yesterday. :)
GSEs! A book full of epic campaign events that totally mangle the face of Golarion. Two samples from Golarion-Shaking Events;
Red Akiton Rising is about a mysterious red star appearing in the night sky, and ancient Azlanti half-Aboleth sorcerers beholden to the Great Old Ones arising from the depths of the sea. In the cataclysmic final act, Aroden, Devourer of Prophecy and Herald of the End Times returns, hungry for blood and souls! Can Rovagug be freed in time to fight him off and save all of Golarion, or is that just trading one apocalypse for another?
Nethys Asunder documents the terrible devastation that ensues when Nethys splits right down the middle, unravelling into opposed magical forces, called the Tapestry and the Pale Tapestry (an all-around-weaker version of the Tapestry). Mana Wastes pop up all over the world as the fabric of magic itself unspools, and the world is ravaged by incidents of 'Manasickness' where attempts to manipulate the spell-threads of the Tapestry end in weird and seemingly-random (but always destructive) results. On the upside, ranks in Profession (weaver) or Craft (tailor) give bonuses to avoid this, and the prices of cloth goods plummet to new lows as every spellcaster in Golarion is forced to learn how to sew...

I believe the RPG Rules line is going to be mostly setting neutral. I did really enjoy the Malhavoc series about events: Anger of Angels, When the Sky Falls, and Cry Havoc. I would certainly buy something along those lines.

No one guessed the Gamemastery Guide OR the APG before they were announced. So paizo may pull something new out of the bag for PFRPG again in 2011. We'll probably find out whatever is after Bestiarty 2 at Gen Con. It probably won't be the Bestiary, so after that their still be one mystery RPG book for 2011.
I wouldn't be too surprised if one or both of the non-bestiary ones aren't even on the above lists.

I loved these books too, especially Anger Of Angels. I'd love to see a Pathfinder product that dealt with running a celestial-themed campaign. Something along the lines of the Encyclopedia Arcane series would be good too... but only if the dreaded power creep can be safely sidestepped. :)

I really have no interest in anything other than "core" materials. Monsters fall under the heading of "core" for the purpose of playing the game -- more (and varied) opponents is always a good thing.
Rule extensions (such as Epic or Psionics) hold no interest for me for a number of reasons (I don't want to wait for errata, and I have no interest in an ever burgeoning mass of rules). But the Bestiary books, books on the Golarion setting, and similar "fluff" (ie. non-rules) material is A+ stuff. :)

Besides Bestiary 3 its anyones guess
Only way we will see asian is they do the asian adventure path
Psionic and Epic both need alot of work according to Paizo Staff
I want to see an Advance Players Guide Two
and Maybe a Savage Spieces Type of book
I think we might see the Asian book: discussing different Asian Cultures, how classes work -possibly reworking current classes, which I'd prefer, or a few new classes- magic items, and spells. I also think we're likely to see a few Asian monsters in the Bestiary 3. Why do I think this? Well, I think next year we'll see the Tian Xi Adventure Path that James Jacobs has been dropping tidbits around for the last few years. Perhaps the winter AP, or quite possibly (depending on when they decide to release the Asian hardcover) the fall AP. I do think they will try and keep the Asian book as setting neutral as possible. I also think they will release a Golarion specific hardcover on Tian Xi as part of the Chronicles line with the AP (similar to the Inner Sea book that is being released this year.)
Just my 2 coppers.

If I'm not mistaken, Paizo said that they *couldn't* do more than three books a year, but not that they *would* always do three books a year. I'm wondering if the market saturation with regard to rule books doesn't outweigh the fans' clamor for 'more!'.
I know that I already have more Pathfinder (and PF-compatible) rulebooks to last me a lifetime. I am not looking forward to 'more of the same, just with changed rules', but things that haven't been done before.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Paizo is going to do Bestiary 3, because it will be a guaranteed seller. Then, one 'new' type of book that we haven't been speculating about. And no third.

I only want adventures and rules. Info with adventures are enough.
That would be the adventure paths line then, if I understand what you are wanting. Not the Pathfinder ruleset line. The adventure paths are adventures with some rules added in. There are a half-a-dozen APs per year.
Pathfinder ruleset is the core system line, with 3 books per year. I believe the thread was about what people wanted to see in the PF ruleset line, not the AP line.

I'd love to see a Monstrous PC's book (Obviously). However, I expect we'll see Bestiary 3, a Magic compendium, and perhaps either an Epic Level or Equipment guide in 2011.
Paizo is releasing a softcover equipment book this month actually in the Companion line. I really doubt they are going to retread that ground next year even in a different product line. A 256 page hardcover equipment book seems like serious overkill regardless.
Also, a full hardcover magic or divine sourcebook seems unlikely to me. APG has a big spell section, 2-3 arcane classes, 2 divine classes, and I'm certain a large set of magic items. Again seems like a lot of retreading or just laying out tons of supplemental rules.

I do suspect an Asian themed book is likely for next year. Since epic and psionics have both been called unlikely I'm hoping a monstrous PCs book is in the cards.
There was an old 2e book called "creative campaigning" which I liked, although maybe most of that material will be covered in the advanced gamemastery book.

Who said epic and psionics was 'unlikely'? Last I heard from James and others they were higher in the queue than any monster book.

I can't find the post off hand about psionics, but I remember it being mentioned that they will wait to see what Dreamscarred Press does first.
Here's a post by James on Epic, but that is subject to change I'm sure.

I am kinda worried about Paizo doing psionics. They want to alter it too heavily, and that does not fit in with the "backwards compatible" theme at all. If they were to take the Psionics in the SRD and tweak it, fine, but an overhaul sounds too harsh on me, considering I use Malhavoc Press, Dreamscarred Press, and WotC material for my psionic needs. I don't want to use a whole new system and then see it unsupported for months.
Which leads to my next issue---support for Psionics. Both Psionics and Epic are in the SRD and I wish Paizo would support those more. Considering the severe lack of support we received from both of those from WotC and 3PP. If anything, I would rather see them do Psionics and Epic and just get that out the way, adding more to them via Pathfinder Companions and future APGs. Then do other books.

Agreed with you here.

And I disagree. Don't really care if it is overhauled or not. I am just interested in seeing support for it from Paizo (and Dreamscarred Press, and whoever else I feel like).

Since we're doing wild speculation I'll throw out a few possibilities.
Red Sands of Mars - High swashbuckling pulp fantasy adventure on the red planet.
The Art of Pathfinder
Have Gun Will Travel - Wild West adventures
Ug: Dawn of Man - No tech fantasy gaming in a fresh out of the cave and into the hostile world of dinosaurs and rival cavemen.
Where's My Money - Gaming in the seedy world of hookers and pimps.
Boogie Town - Polyester and platform shoes rule in this hard hitting game of disco rivalry.
And the one I'm looking forward to the most...
Mime: The Mimicry – The silent game of pantomiming heroes.

Ultimately this may be one of the reasons Paizo is dragging their feet on this. They don't want to use the existing psionics system because it's tough to integrate into their products. Many of the folks who like psionics love the power point system and don't want it to change. It's a big conflicting mess.
Game products that only require core sell best and currently including psionics into a module requires a bit more than just the core book.

Psionics & Epic-level rules both fall clearly into the "Meh, no thanks" category for me. I know they have their fans, though, so perhaps both will eventually receive HB support.
Personally, beyond a bestiary, I suspect there will be only one other hardback book for 2011. If no Paizo-definitive book on asian-themed adventuring surfaces in 2011, my suspects include:
Advanced Player's Guide 2: Additional rules for customizing the existing classes. No new core classes but perhaps some Golarion-themed prestige classes. New class abilities, feats, spells, etc.
Gamemaster Guide 2: Variant rules that allow for greater customization from the PF style of play that evolved out of 3.x. Specifically, how to run a low(er) magic game; genre support for horror, science-fantasy or sword-n-planet games; variant spellcasting systems, etc.; tips/guidelines for fleshing out campaign areas/settings.
Pathfinder Compendium: Collections of support articles from the various Pathfinder APs. Possibly arranged according to a theme but more likely a "greatest hits/fan faves" compilation.
I also think it's more likely, we'll see RPG support grow more in the softback ranks rather than via hardback. As part of "expanding Golarion", I could see a Paizo treatment on naval characters/adventures/travel, etc. but I don't see that getting a full-blown HB treatment. Same for topics like mass combat, planar travel, etc.
I DON'T expect to see a Pathfinder Modern appear in 2011 OR 2012. While some of the Paizo staff have indicated it's an idea that's been kicked around, I suspect that at the end of the day, it diverges too much from the core products. All of those products support Golarion and the fantasy RPG genre. A PF Modern would likely receive limited ongoing support as it would compete (for resources if nothing else) with PF & Golarion. As much as I'd like to see a PF Modern, I don't think it coexists with their business model.
I DO see a 3rd-party PF-licensed Modern update, however. I can even see multiple versions from various 3PPs as a possibility.

Shinmizu |

But, using your example, there are Divine rules for divine ranks and deity abilities in the SRD a well, which Paizo doesn't use because the only deities that have statistics are demigods.
I like epic gaming, despite the work often necessary to playtest and fix up the stuff in the epic handbook, but I have absolutely no problem with Paizo not attempting any sort of backwards compatibility with the divine rules as they exist. Wizards should have waited for the completion of the epic level rules (which should have been proofread and playtested a HELL of a lot more than they were) before even starting on the diety rules.

Oh, I'd love to see some nice Unearthed-Arcana-esque class variants!
Even without larger changes, there's pretty much infinite potential for alternate Domain, Bloodline and School Specialization powers, in addition to new Domains and Bloodlines, and alternate Wizard breakdowns (similar to the variant 'schools' offered up in the 2nd edition Spells & Powers supplements, with schools like Fire, Alchemy and Shadow). I've got like 75 alternate Domain, Bloodline and School options just off the top of my head, and the Wikia site is loaded with alternate Bloodlines, etc.
Alternate Rage powers, Rogue Talents and / or Bardic Performance options also could greatly diversify the appropriate classes, to add some flavor and excitement to the non-spellcasters.

Oriental Adventures NOW!
I want the entire world detailed as soon as possible. Plus more options for building different regional characters would be great.
One of my players constantly asks me when they we are going to play a game that heads to the east. Plus I don't like staring at a map that has an edge where I do everything I can to halt any travel that direction. I run a very free flowing game and a complete setting is ideal.
Plus a Oriental NPC guide, and along with Oriental treasure cards would be an requirement.

![]() |

I know the Paizo folks have said they have no desire to come out with books for other settings. While they did not rule out an oriental setting, they (whoever it was in which ever topic- possibly Mona, but not sure on that so don't quote me) said that an oriental setting, even if on Gollarion was essentially a different setting.
They have said often that Epic rules are something they want to look at some day in the future... they made it sound rather distant.
I have NOT heard any discussion from Paizo on Modern. Though I know another group has taken the task of making a P-Modern book.
They have said Psionics is possible but they want to see what Dreamscarred Press does.
So, besides Bestiary 3... no clue.
Honestly I would be happy with Bestiary 3, Bestiary 4, and Templates and Options for your Bestiaries. lol Yeah I LIKE monster books. can't have too many! No such thing as a bad monster book! lol

![]() |
The books I find myself coming back to more than anything else are the highly specialized books like the Spell Compendium and Magic Item Compendium, so I'd be thrilled to see anything like that, but I'd guess something more like the Advanced Player's Guide 2 is more likely. Without releasing books as frequently as Wizards did, I can't imagine Paizo getting too specalized. Can you imagine getting Complete Arcane and then having to wait a year or two before we got Complete Divine, and then again before Complete Warrior, etc., etc.? The game would get lop-sided fast!

![]() |

James mentioned his Modern game and I for one would like to see the rules that would allow me to play Future/Apocalyptic game and how to mix technology and magic, but I think that something like that is at least two years in the future. I strongly suspect that Oriental Adventures book and Bestiary 3 are safe bets. Once again, I would love Pathfinder Modern/Future/Apocalypse, but a book like that without support in other products and adventure paths and modules would be dubious proposition, methinks.
