My disappointment? It appears the minis included are unpainted.
That's correct. Hero minis are all blue, some monsters are red, some are white, some are translucent, and boss minis tend to be either white or gray. It does help make it clear, when playing, who is who.
They still tend to look decent. In fact, interestingly enough, I find the minis have a ton more detail than their counterparts as painted D&D minis. In some ways, I almost prefer them in this form - the detail of the stitching on the flesh golem, for example, is really impressive.

Not too surprising as Peter Lee (head mini wrangler over at WOtC) stated he choose many of the sculpts included in the game b/c he felt the original, unpainted mini was so awesome people needed to see what it looked like before it got paint slopped all over it. I'm loving the Dracolich, Flesh Golem and Gargoyle myself. This is also a prime place to re-start my mini painting imo.

(Shudder)... don't say it too loud, but I saw the bow in a shop, and I was almost tempted ... Husssshhhhh !
But my problem is : is it in any fashion close to the mechanisms of 4e, or is it a really independant game.
Thanks for your comments.
There are 5 Heroes each with at-will, utility & daily powers (you choose a few from a medium sized selection). The party has 2 healing surge tokens to heal heroes who are at 0 HP at the start of their turns.
So yeah - its 4E mechanics.
You'll hate it. lol

WotC recently had a contest for some player-submitted scenarios, and just posted the winners. Some pretty awesome stuff - try to hunt down a werewolf without succumbing to lycanthropy, try to heal a dying Hero before it is too late, try and find a magic artifact that turns fallen Heroes into wraiths...
And next month is Wrath of Ashardalon, which is also looking awesome!

This game is fun, but it's kicking our butts. We win maybe 1 out of 3 with 4 players.
We played our third game this past Friday and recorded our first loss. We only get to play it maybe 1 game night out 5 (got a lot of new games over the holidays!!).
I tell ya - I'm liking board gaming a helluva a lot more than RPGs right now.

I just had a chance to finally play through the solo adventure this past weekend. It was a lot of fun and I barely escaped. If Strahd had one more round, I'd have been dead.
Our group is getting together this coming Saturday to try it out together for the first time and I'm eager to see how it plays for a group.

Just finished up our first Castle Ravenloft game. It was a great time and we had a lot of fun with it. In the 4 hours we played, we managed to get through two scenarios (technically, the same scenario twice). We had six players, so we figured it might be a bit easier.
Both games were Adventure 2 in which you have to find the Icon of Ravenloft. On the second turn of the first game, the Strahd Attacks card was pulled and he brutalized us all. From there things went downhill, but in a "Let's see how bad this can be." kind of way. We managed to find the crypt and unleash a wave of monsters that quickly devoured everyone but the paladin (a stand-in from Wrath of Ashardalon). He fell to a dart to the back from a trap.
Frist scenario - TPK.
We went back for more though determined to put one in the win column. Things went much smoother the second game as people had a better idea of the rules/gameplay and were able to make some tactical decisions to improve our odds. We used powers much more readily and were better able to support one another. While we used all of our healing surges, we ended the evening triumphantly by claiming the icon and slaying the monsters.
The game provided a great afternoon of exploration, monster slaying, treasure hunting and a lot of laughs. I'd recommend checking it out if you get a chance.

I just had Wrath of Ashardalon show up, and it is excellent. Basically the same rules (though they feel a bit smoother, and include a FAQ). 5 new characters for use - they feel a bit weaker than the Castle Ravenloft characters, but the treasures in Wrath feel a bit stronger.
What I like best, though, is that Wrath adds some new elements into the adventures. We have 'chambers' for one thing - you'll flip one tile, which will be the entrance to a large section of several tiles, usually filled with monsters and a mini-boss.
In addition, there are some basic rules for campaigns - you'll play through a few scenarios, and in between them can buy magic items with gold you find, and can earn bonuses - if you defeated the orc stronghold and orc Villain, for example, you gain a boon that reduces how many orcs show up in your next adventure.
At the same time, we've got some mean new monsters (like Legion Devils, who always show up in groups of three) and encounters - including curses that stick around to plague the heroes.
Definitely looking like fun to me!

This game is pretty fun. Once we got the rules down, play was pretty smooth.
Minor gripes:
- Half of the hero mini's looked the same, so we kept getting confused as to who was who.
- Rules written kind of vaguely.
Since its' a board game, it can't quite adequately capture the atmosphere of the Ravenloft setting like a 2E/3E campaign could (with a good DM, of course). This was my main gripe with the game, but it was an unreasonable expectation set by me.
I guess I was expecting character choices to be a little bit more geared to the setting as well, but what can ya do?
