Tolkien--how trite and passe. Elves 'n' orcs are sooooo last century.

I love Tolkien. By far my favorite author. And it annoys the hell out of me when contemporary fantasy authors make their bones by bashing him. Srsly guys, if not for him, you wouldn't have an industry.

I hereby reaffirm my unabashed love for Prof Tolkien and his works. Later Oedipal writers are to be expected.

I loved Tolkien, I've probably gone through The Hobbit and LoTR at least a dozen times each. As epic as the story is the writing can be pretty boring at times. I would highly recommend any new reader avoid the books until they've read enough modern fantasy books to truly appreciate how well crafted the story is compared to a lot of what comes out today, without the writing turning them off to the books.

Presently reading Codex Alera (Captain's Fury), but I went through the Lord of the Rings around the end of last year. My new copies were a gift from my wife, so it's about that time every year I pick up ........

I know a lot of people these days agree with you, Balodek, and I applaud you for sticking with Tolkien while feeling that way. But just for a contrasting view point, I actually read Tolkien not just for the story, but for the writing itself.

Some of the writing and phrases are really good, but his poetry makes me shudder. I go back and read them every couple of years to see how my enjoyment changes as I grow older and gain perspective on life.

Tolkien has been my favorite author for almost as long as I can remember. I love the story (stories) and writing.

I think he actually achieved what he set out to do - create an English mythology.
