Sharing the GMing - feasible?

Kingmaker

Hi,

We were considering sharing the GMing load for the Kingmaker series between a few of us. Does anyone have a feel for whether this would work?

Options we are tossing about are each GM doing an instalment or two, or maybe (given the sandbox approach) a region?

Cheers,
James.

I have been in several groups in which we did what you proposed. For the most part, this worked and gave those that never been a GM/DM before new perspective on how much work goes into running an adventure. Even a published one...

The best recommendation that I can make is to find out who will be running adventures and working out the details before you start the sessions. Sharing the same house rules, rule interpretations and other minor details will go a long way to make the transition smoother.

Did it pretty often in 1.0 & 2.0, mostly did DMing in 3.0, 3.5, and PF.

As I recall it worked out pretty well. Usually the dual DMs ahould discuss power of PCs treasure that they should or should not give out.

The other issue is one that is beyond the game, what happens to the DMs PC while he is DMing and while the other DM is DMing. It could happen....

DM1 will not kill DM2s PC, b/c DM2 could return the favor!
DM1 will favor DM2s PC, hoping that DM2 will favor his PC.

DM1 will add treasure that he wants for his PC....

Depends on both DMs!!!!

All DM's should get along, should agree to some extent on rules as noted above but must be willing to have faith in the other DM and not backseat drive unless requested are good. The only other caveat I have would be a general spoiler concern, if it's an issue. Once a chapter is selected to run, there is ideally no going back from deciding to run it. I'd also suggest, then, waiting for all chapters to be received first.

I did run an Ars Magica campaign with this style of playing. A sandbox AP is fine for it. We had a main GM (me), who developed the main story; and two other GM who ran sidequests, regions or NPCs; two others players had one or more NPC each. It's the main GM who must control what the other players can rule about.

It's easier when the other players come up with new material instead of things already in the AP, so they don't need to read the AP and the DM don't know anything (as he is going to be a player).
For ex. for Kingmaker, at least the first book, you could "give" one hex to another GM, and tell him to make a level 1-2 encounter (perhaps not a combat one). You could "lend" one or two fluff NPCs, maybe the two young daughters of someone near Oleg's Post. If the other GM is good, he will quickly manage to build some story that interlaces with yours: both sisters admire and love one PC, and fight for him; or one is a changeling (the real one kidnapped at birth by faeries), etc. When things are right, the other GM even can interrupt your story to introduce elements of his own:
DM1: "...and after some days in the wild you are approaching Oleg's site and..."
DM2: "Just one minute, Bob... Just before you enter the post, Alianna comes running, with her cheeks burning, and she offers Sajan a woolen scarf saying "I made this for you". Her sister comes running too, and she takes Alianna's hand and push her towards their house. Arjan, there is a paper in the scarf... Bob, gon on please"
One great idea is having one player create the NPCs and plots about the story of another player's PC.
