Proficiency in Unarmed Strikes?

Is everyone assumed to be proficient in unarmed strikes? I just noticed that it is on the Simple Weapons Table in the equipment chapter. Does that actually mean that my wizard will take a -4 penalty to hit should he try and punch someone in the face?

Seems like a little much when you also consider the low damage and the fact that it provokes.

Back in 2nd ed. you would have a -4 to hit, that was changed in 3rd. ed with the introduction of attacks of opportunity.

Technically tho, i think if it's classed as a simple weapon then yes, wizards don't have simple weapon prof., therefore, -4 to hit.

The Exchange

"All characters are proficient with unarmed strikes and any natural weapons possessed by their race."

So even wizards can punch, just not going to do much damage....
