Truly Terrible Syfy Movies

So I'm watching "Dinoshark." The info on the cable guide says: "A dinosaur-shark hybrid terrorizes a resort in Mexico, and its up to a young fishing boat captain to stop it." This thing is so bad its funny.

So what will it take to get a half-dinosaur template into the Bestiary II? This could really take off. Think of all the things you could cross dinosaurs with...

The Exchange

Yea, that stupid show is playing in the background out my sister's house where I am staying. The thing just jumped out of the water and pounced a woman water skier ala Jaws 2 view.

They got like biblical chant going on when it strikes.

Look behind you!

So lame.

Well they played "Dinocroc" right after it if your looking for idea's.

The Exchange

Man with knife underwater wins first round with Dinoshark.

The Exchange

Hunting rifle man tossed off bumped boat and weaved hookily 1 foot back and forth until sinking in blood. As fast as that thing moves, it should have submerged him immediately while dragging him 100+ feet.

So damn silly.

I consider just about everything they show to be truly terrible. I don't want Scyfy, I want good sci-fi.

Generally, Scyfy's series are OK - they either seem to pick the good ones from syndication or generally develop some good properties of their own.

But man...those movies - it's like they just throw money at a bunch newbie directors with one computer graphics guy and every low-B to grade D actor in Hollywood and say: "Make me a movie!"

Silver Crusade

I'm eagerly awaiting Squidactyl, Robohobo, and Loud Noises.

I think it's a testimony that I don't know if those are joke names or not.

Silver Crusade

In all seriousness, I actually would watch a Rock Lobster movie provided they secure the rights for the appropriate soundtrack.

Liberty's Edge

AND a B-52 to drop a bomb on the thing.

Maybe there's some snakes on the B-52.

Badda bing we wrote a Sy Fy movie.

Nothing's quite as bad as Giant Shark Vs. Mega Octopus. Nothing.

So, of the SciFi movies, what do people think the breakdown between
Truly Terrible, Terrible to Mediocre, and Better than Mediocre are proporionately? I'd say Better than Mediocre on their part could only be 5% at the greatest. What about the other two? 80% TtM and 15% TT?

Loud Noises...ROFL...I could so see that as a Scyfy movie!

Robohobo sounds like comedic supervillain.

Careful now - those guys at the network might run with it! Hopefully, you'll get at least a "created by" credit. ;-)

I'd say that's a close estimate - maybe only 2% in the BtM category.

Liberty's Edge

I am worried that the SyFy film "Red", starring Felicia Day as a decendant of Red Riding Hood (a family of werewolf hunters no less) is gonna be the usual load of offal, but I really want it to be good, so I'm torn.

I think 'Red' is being done by the same group that did the 'Tin Man' mini-series a while back, 'Alice' a few months ago, and recently a Beauty and the Beast movie with Estella Warren ::drools::

Ahem, where was I? Ah, yes. Those movies were low budget made for TV, but worked rather well. I'm hoping for much the same with Red. ^_^

Dark Archive

Robohobo sounds awesome. He'd totally squish Mansquito!

Freehold DM wrote:

Yeah..did you actually watch "Rock monster"? They didn't even bother to give the movie a real name...

Robohobo vs. Mansquito. Ok, now just I need to write the script and contact Syfy.

I actually enjoy the cheesy syfy saturday night movies :)

Frankenfish is one of my old faves. :)

Tin Man was better than Alice, Alice was maybe better than Beauty and the Beasts, both of the latter were better than Thor Hammer of the Gods. Of course, Estella Warren is what made B&tB watchable. I don't hold out much hope for Red. I guess Tin Man was best in a while. Why don't they make 'em like the Dune movies?

I rather liked Tin Man, so I find that to be happy news.

I gave Beauty and the Beasts about ten minutes, then had to change the channel. It was just awful. The eyecandy wasn't enough to keep me interested. It was also a bit of a peeve to see something in a quasi-medieval setting with women prancing around in miniskirts. (I know, not a big deal, but some things like that bug me. For example, River Phoenix as a young Indiana Jones with long hair and an earring.) Tin Man and Alice were good interpretations of already good stories.

Now, as for Robohobo, here's my synopsis: "A sinister corporation is doing medical experimentation on the homeless. When one of their cybernetic experiements escapes, the researchers must then face the wrath of Robohobo, a mentally unstable homeless man now enhanced with flesh-rending robotic limbs."

What do you think? Is it a winner?

Wait, Shadowborn, were you giving it your undivided attention, or doing other things when you weren't looking at Estella? I think I know what you did wrong.

Exactly my take on them. Of course they are full of ridiculously bad acting, horrible CG effects and awful plots but that is part of the fun. B movies are B for a reason. They can be enjoyable with the right mindset though. Also you can endlessly harvest them for D&D/Pathfinder ideas....

Here, take $1m. Make it, but just remember you need-

1 eyecandy female actor
1 "scream like a banshee" female actor
1 semi-fit, chisel-chinned male lead
3 female hotties of questionable morals to die
3 male hotties that are idiotic, sexist, or egotistical to die horribly
2 pentium 2 computers with a CG software pack from the late 90s and 2 college drop-out computer design people.
Good luck.

Liberty's Edge

SyFy sounds like they use the same production values as the old Dr. Who.

Liberty's Edge

Weren't "Frank Herbert's Dune" and "The Children of Dune" Sci-Fi miniseries? I actually enjoyed them quite a bit. It was closer to the book (The Children of Dune was a combination of the next two books) than the old Dune movie (but both are enjoyable in the right circumstances).

I own both these series and love them. They're not the best production value, but they're absolutely fantastic. Sci-Fi was good then.

Dune Miniseries on wiki
Says its still one of Sci-Fi's highest rated programs ever.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, I have the first set on DVD. Watch it often. Don't have Children of Dune yet. There are always two things I want from that Children of Dune movie. The 'tarot' deck that whats-her-name uses (the golden hexagon tiles), and the chess-looking game.

The production quality is definitely not the best, but the acting is phenomenal! You can really tell the actors were definitely into presenting here.

I've heard some good things about Earthsea, but its sad that the animated version can't be released in the US because of Sci-Fi's legal claim. :(

Slightly off-topic: City of Heroes MMORPG doesn't have robo-hobos, but it does feature both mutated hobos ("The Lost") and heavily cyborged punkers ("The Freakshow") as villains to fight.

Children of Dune was pretty darn good. The best part about it was the score by Brian Tyler, which keeps getting re-used in movie trailers -- Master & Commander used "Summon The Worms" for its trailer, and one of the Star Trek trailers last year used a remix of one of the other tracks.

Edit: fixed a misremembrance.

Dune was pretty good, although I had trouble accepting the guy they picked to play Paul. He came off (to me, anyways) as more of a whiny punk than a mentat duke in training. The plot was easier to follow than the theatrical movie was. I only understood that because I had read the book.

But, but the dialogue...so stilted, so...lame. It burns us. Burnsssss.

I see... you also need to switch the sound to a sexy soundtrack.

Scarab Sages

The sci-fi channel does seem to make much better miniseries than they do movies. Tin Man and Dune were both quite watcheable.

Ok, I'm thinking:

Traci Lords as the beautiful but heartless head of the top secret research facility.

Asia Argento (*edit: changed pic) as the heart-of-gold manager of a soup kitchen that becomes embroiled in the horror when she investigates the disappearances of the street people no one but her seems to care about.

Kevin Sorbo as the hard-boiled but kind-hearted police detective who is the only one that takes the investigation seriously.

The rest I'm sure we can just pick from various headshots...

Pure gold! We're almost ready to shoot and send to ScyFy!

The Robohobo would have to either a purely CGI creation or some guy from we've never heard of in an American film - possibly some Eastern European actor with rock-hard abs, some martial arts training, and ABSOLUTELY no understanding of the English language so he can just mumble incoherently.

Also off-topic: I created Hillbilly Robot in City of Heroes some time back. So it's a robo-hick - that's sorta close to a robo-hobo.;-)

i would so watch robohobo!!!!! i actually like stupid b- movies. at least i know what i'm in for when i turn on syfy, just like all those old 50's movies. good stuff, i'll take rock monster over that way too long piece of crap avatar.

Hmm. I was actually thinking we could cast Robert Englund. No need for a big CG budget, we'll just outfit him with platform shoes, and bionic arms operated with hydraulics and remote controls. He's a good enough actor that he can handle incoherent mumbling.

What is saved on CG can be spent on pyrotechnics for the climactic ending when the secret lab blows sky high, with our protagonists narrowly escaping death, and Robohobo going up with the place (or does he? duh-duh-duhhhhhh!)

Frankenfish was Meh. Plenty of decapitations. Snakehead Terror was basically the same movie but somehow worse. Has anyone else noticed the sheer amount of decapitations in SyFy movies? Its like their bread and butter.

Oh, Dont get me wrong, I didnt mean to say that all the decapitations were a bad thing. They are the best part about SyFy movies!
