Here is something I threw together real fast. A bard really didn't fit the whole fighter/mage concept since a bard is really a Rogue/Magic User. I used the bard as a base and stripped all the abilities off and shifted the saves from REF/WILL to FORT/WILL to show a more fighter like save. I still need a class name and a spell list.
It is 3/4 base progression and D8 hit dice. I could not see giving it fighter equivalent BAB and hit dice because that combined with spell casting from first level would make that unbalanced. It's abilities would compensate for the other 1/4 BAB and lower HP average. The capstone may or may not be capstone caliber since it was the first thing that popped in my head and wasn't thought out too much.
The number of levels with no line item in abilities are in line with the core base classes. (gaining new spells and more spells per day is an implied gain for that level)

I think the EK or bard are both ok gishes but both have issues.
The biggest EK issues is that the feats best able to help the gish (armor feats and Arcane Strike) and the EK capstone all interfere with each other by requiring a swift action. A minor complaint is that the capstone makes higher crit range weapons just plain better than others which seems like odd design. It seems odd that the best setup for an EK may be two kukris.
The bard would work but it has somewhat undesirable class abilities and a spell list that doesn't get much love. The progression itself is a complaint but I don't think it is a very serious one.
It is also worth noting that every mellee class has a special abilities that helps them hit, at least sometimes on somethings: fighters have weapon training, rangers have favored enemies, paladins have smite, barbarians have rage, and monks have a special flurry BAB.
My fixes would be do what you did and track the bard, but :
0) You didn't say which class list but I would use wizard/sorc.
1) Just give medium armor. Don't fluff around with ASF and thus avoid the conflict with Arcane Strike.
2) I prefer channeling spells like the duskblade did to your solution of granting special abilities to a mellee weapon. I might design it as follows:
The character's weapon is always spell storing (note that spell storing is limited to 3rd level spells). At 7th level he can put a spell in as a move action.
3) Consider adding in something to help hit. I expect it will be ugly otherwise.

It would have a unique limited spell list. It would consist of sorc/wiz spells
Ultimately, they have 5 less to hit at 20. They are not a pure fighter so they will have the hybrid limitation.

Cool. It looks a lot like this that I did a while back, I think you have some better class features though. I did a spell list that was optimised to get something like the psychic warrior's effects.
I also did a more evoker-styled caster/fighter, with a rather different set of spells.
Feel free to use any ideas from these if you think it will help your creation!
