My first thought is dissapointment. Its not a Warhammer movie. Its Warhammer 40K. I was hoping for skaven, vampires, skeletons and witchhunters.
That being said, there are some decent Warhammer 40k books out there - though I think an adaption of some of the Space Wolf stuff would be more interesting than ultramarines. Anyone know if the story will be original or will it be based on preexisting material?

Wicht, I had the same thought RE Fantesy vs 40K, but hey....
As far as using ultramarines, I think that if they used any of the others people who don't know warhammer 40k would be like "Sapce, and wolves? Huh?" or "blood angels? This some sort of vampire porn...." at least they see "marines" in the title....

The movie is being written by Dan Abnett, which sold me straight off.
John Hurt had pre-existing knowledge of WH40K? Impressive. Terrence Stamp's statement just solds like PR claptrap though.
Although it would be awesome if Stamp was playing some kind of evil Chaos overlord, possibly named 'Zog', and had a line along the lines of, "KNEEL BEFORE...", but that probably won't happen.

Yeah I can't really imagine Hollywood bankrolling a WARHAMMER movie (they'd go for the somewhat less hardcore WARCRAFT option which Sam Raimi is already doing).
WARHAMMER 40,000 even less so:
"Okay, so we've made the Space Marines into normal guys just in big armour, and they have some women in their ranks, and they use lasers rather than big guns, and the Emperor is actually a really nice guy and the Space Marines are out to fight the forces of evil Chaos and save some kittens whilst they're up for it. Oh yeah, can we take out all refrences to the Emperor being a God, please? That might not play so well in Tennessee. Plus it's got to be PG-13."
They seem to avoided that fate anyway.

I, for one, am stoked!
John Hurt is the man!
I would have preferred a Dark Angels movie, if it had to be a Space Marines centered one, but yeah the Ultramarines are probably the most recognized chapter (it's also the default chapter in the rulebook).
I wonder if it'll be a Chaos or Tyranid threat that the movie deals with, most likely Chaos (to prevent criticism of it being an Alien rip-off).
A different option could have been an Imperial Guard feature, with the marines appearing at the end of the movie to give it a tie-in to a sequel.
I hope it's enough of a success to warrant a second movie and maybe a fantasy movie too. When talking Warhammer Fantasy flicks, I'm always reminded of this awesome video sequence.

After a year and a half of nothing but Imperium releases in 40k, I would of liked to see something else in the movie. Almost anything else. Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos, Daemons, Tyranids, Orks, any combinations of the above would have been nice. That being said, I will still support the movie. If it does well, maybe some of the above will happen next time.

Well, to be fair, I would expect to see at least 1 of those in it, after all, these ultramarines need something to fight....I doubt it will be internal squabbles all the way...
