Did Alethian want the ring of feather fall? He's welcome to it, but remember that you can only get the benefit of wearing two magical rings at a time - not sure what he already has. Also, did you note the bow that you got from the elves on your character sheet?

Yes I'll take the ring, ive got one other ring (of protection) Yes ive noted the bow, also could I have sold my masterwork composite long bow when we sold the other weapons? It would be worth 400gp, can I get 200gp for it?

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

You can sell the bow for 200.

Alethian:

Spoiler:
You manage to filch coins, gems, jewellery and other small fence-able items to a total worth of 2600gp. This is probably far, far more than you would normally get for a few slight of hand rolls, given the situation (merchants packing up after a relatively successful fair, with lots of coins and small valuable goods about).

Male Human Scribe/4

With his spot check of -1, Elendil is remains completely unaware of Alethian's unlawful exploits. He wouldn't have been too fussed had he spotted, except maybe were you to target Therav, our employer...

Happy to head back to town, accompanying Therav to ensure fulfill their obligation and ensure he arrives back safely. We may as well hold the scroll with the intention of returning down the track to close the gate. Can possibly also mention it to Celeste or the Sriders of Fharlangh (pretty sure I've got that a little wrong!); they may have resources willing to undertake the task if given the scroll.

Back at the city might be worth making a visit to Skie's to sell the other scrolls we recovered? There is not much point holding onto them, considering they are so high level?

Arcane scroll of sending (CL15)
Arcane scroll of plane shift (CL15)
Arcane scroll of scrying (CL15)

Ok, I've made some adjustments to Grom and bought some equipment):

Mothman:

Spoiler:
Thanks for the tip on the heavy shield, I have changed it to a light shield. I thought we had a house rule where you get a bonus 0-lvl spell based off wisdom, but happy to lower by one if note.

Equipment:
+2 Full Plate armour (5,500)
+1 Flaming Warhammer (8,000)
+1 Steel Shield (1,159)
2 x M/W Throwing Axes (616)

Will probably take a couple of healing potions, and all other equipment will be based on PHB available items (I've made the purchases but do not have the list handy). Should be left with roughly 3,000 in coins and gems, change from the 19,000.

Hope that's ok?

How are we going with our tab thing with skie? Are we close to getting our discount? When we get back to town Alethian will enquire at Skies about purchasing some gloves of dexterity

The journey back to Cauldron is uneventful enough – no dangers that you can’t easily handle present themselves.

Upon reaching the city gates, you are somewhat surprised to see that the gate guards appear to be stopping and questioning most people entering or leaving the city – normally people just come and go as they please during daylight hours when the gates are open. You also notice that there are more guards than usual, and many of them are well armed and armoured half orcs, wearing tabards bearing Cauldron’s coat of arms (a watchful eye wreathed in flame) over some other uniform.

You are told upon entering the gates that taxes are being collected from all citizens within the next few weeks (or next time you leave the city, whichever comes first), and that taxes are being increased. Everyone needs to make themselves available to meet with auditors and tax collectors who are currently going through working out what everyone owes under the new tax scheme.

Word on the street is that the increase in taxes are due to the recent dangers and unrest that have rocked the city, and some of the proposed changes have already been implemented, in the form of the city guard numbers being almost doubled by hiring a band of half-orc mercenaries. Despite that the increase in taxes is supposed to be to protect the city, many (most?) citizens are very unhappy with the large increase in taxes, and a lot of this anger and frustration is taken out on the most visible symbol of the increased taxes, the half orc additions to the guard.

Over the next few weeks there are a number of arrests made as people try to sneak out of the city to evade paying their taxes, lie to auditors about their income and wealth, or take out their anger by attacking city officials or damaging property.

Prices for goods across the city are increased by an average of 10%, as merchants and shopkeepers desperately try to pass on the looming increased costs to their customers.

Skie is now giving you the Adventurer’s Discount (as long as you tell her tales of your most recent exploits). She has added the name of your group, the Ash Walkers, to the runes at her front door.

So you can sell magic items to her for 60% of their value rather than 50%, and she gives you a 10% discount on items purchased.

Elendil is unable to find Celeste – enquiries at the Cusp of Sunrise indicate that she has not yet returned from Sasserine and has sent no word as to when she might return. He is able to make contact with the Striders of Fharlahgn, and their leader, Meerthan agrees solemnly to take the scroll and make a journey out to Mellorell to attempt to close the gate. He reports that things have been fairly quiet in the city in the couple of weeks the group has been gone, except for the unrest caused by word of the tax hikes.

About two weeks after you get back to town, as the date for the actual tax collections to begin nears, word travels through the city by word of mouth in hushed by excited tones, that there is to be a demonstration to protest the tax hikes, held outside the town hall on the morrow. Some seem to think it is being organised by a consortium of rich merchants, some by a union of guilds, others by a disenfranchised noble, still others think the Last Laugh is behind the organisation. Some are counting on it being a peaceful demonstration, some think it may turn violent, some say that a formal challenge is going to be issued to the mayor or the commander of the town guard (who is ultimately responsible in ensuring that taxes are collected).

Spoiler:
You are approached by Jenya Urikas, the high priestess of St Cuthbert. She says she has heard a rumour that there is going to be some sort of demonstration outside the town hall tomorrow, and further, she has heard that Alek Tercival may be attending. She has not seen him in the city since the Demonskar Ball, and does not know how much truth there is to the rumour, but she would like you to go, and if you see Alek there, pass on a message that Jenya wishes to see him and speak to him. She introduces you to Gromm Forgehammer, a visiting cleric of Moradin and a former adventuring companion of Alek, who has heard his friend is missing and has been acting strangely, and wants to make sure he is alright.

Instead, she absorbs the normal markup (10%) that she charges on imports. So you can get them for standard price.

Spoiler:
Jil says it might be a good idea to come armed, and says cryptically, follow the lead of the fellow in the black and white armband.

Yes, for wealthier citizens or those that the government thinks might have things to hide, the auditors and tax collectors are assisted by wizards or priests from the churches of Wee Jas and St Cuthbert, to detect or identify items or even use truth spells. There have been rumours of intimidation and torture to find where people are hiding their money, and heavily armed guard squads breaking down doors in the middle of the night on surprise raids.

Jil says the guild is concerned because people that are paupered by the tax man have no money left to steal or pay for protection. Its harder to steal from the city than from the citizens. Also, the guild is concerned about these new half orc additions to the Guard. They are not, Jil says, undisciplined thugs, but part of a highly organised army of half orc mercenaries. Something like three score have been hired to bolster the Guard, but there is said to be twice that many more camped out in the jungle, led by the mercenary captain The Blue Duke, just waiting for the city to have the funds to hire them. Also, rumours are that many of the influential rich folk in the city have been hiring small squads of these half orcs as private guards ... so effectively there is a foreign army coming into the city, loyal only to money ... Perhaps Tearson Skellerang, the commander of the town guard is planning a coup?

Elendil:

Spoiler:
Jenya mentions to you privately that she is not going to seek out Alek herself for several reasons; one, she does not think a cleric of St Cuthbert will be very welcome at a possibly chaotic demonstration; two, she fears that she and Alek have had a falling out and he may not wish to see her; and three, she is kept very busy with her own duties. Not only is the business of running the temple a lot of work anyway, but Jenya has been spending a lot of time counselling parishioners who have been having disturbing dreams or exhibiting signs of madness lately. Such cases seem to be growing, to what cause Jenya cannot tell. The church of St Cuthbert has been sponsoring and helping to set up an insane asylum to look after some of the poor unfortunates.

She has two scrolls of Cure Serious Wounds available for 375gp each (caster level 5), discounted for 338, but for these you might be better off going to the temple of Cuthbert, at the moment Jenya is willing to give you a discount on healing scrolls of 20% (they don’t normally have wands available). You can get scrolls of Cure Light, Moderate, Serious or Critical available at up to about caster level 7 (or lower, so long as it meets the minimum caster level for the spell) for 20% of (25 x spell level x caster level).

Elendil:

Spoiler:
Alek Tercival has a reputation of being quite humble, level headed and personable, a reputation borne out by your first meeting, after your adventures in Jzadirune and the Malachite Fortress beneath the city. Upon your next meeting at the Demonskar Ball he came across as quite brash, loud and boastful – not quite unpleasantly so, but definitely different to how he’d seemed before. He has also demonstrated quite impressive feats of strength which he had not previously been known for, both witnessed by you (single handedly lifting a huge platter filled with roast boar) and reported by others (moving around logs and timbers when he was seen helping out with the repairs to the Lucky Monkey road house). His relationship with Jenya, which was once quite close has become strained. He has hinted to her several times that he is ‘on a mission from the gods’ but will not say exactly what he is doing on his extended trips away.

Catching up at the tavern for dinner, Elendil turns to Alethian.

"Have you heard anything more on who exactly is organising these protests? It sounds like a potentially dangerous gathering giving all the tension in the air. It would be nice to know who exactly is behind it."

He sips at his ale and then adds, "I might see if I can find more about these half-orc mercenaries. It worries me when governments start out-sourcing security. Greed often means the mercenaries focus on generating profit more than keeping the order."

Assuming he gets time, Elendil will pay a visit to their contact in the city guard (don't have his name on me at the moment) and see if he can gain some more information on who exactly heads up the half-orc mercenaries and what their background might be.

You track down your contact in the Guard, sergeant Skylar Krewis. He is out leading a patrol (of human and half orc guards), but agrees to speak to you once he is off duty.

Later on, over a drink, he tells you that the Guard is now employing approximately sixty half orc mercenaries. The City council voted to increase the guard numbers to deal with threats such as humanoid invasions from the Underdark, rampaging umber hulks, rumoured giant invasions and possible red dragon attacked. It was determined by the Council that it would be better to hire experienced soldiers rather than spend the time training up and equipping new recruits. The City turned to a figure known as the Blue Duke, the captain of a mercenary company called the Blue Company, famous for employing half orcs as well as a few more unusual types (such as giants). There are plans to employ more members of the Blue Company once funds are available.

Krewis is quite diplomatic, and says that the new half orc recruits seem competent, well trained and disciplined, but you can tell that he doesn’t really like the idea of hiring mercenaries to flesh out the ranks of the Guard. He’s also quietly concerned that many citizens seem to be taking out their anger at the tax hikes on the half orcs. While additional barracks space is being constructed for them, about half the new recruits are staying at a boarding house in the city called Minuta’s Board – there have been a number of incidents of vandalism and drunken assaults at the place.

Spoiler:
wizards name is Kylane Lannis. Kylane adventured for a number of years in his younger days, with a group of elves named the Wild Hearts. There travels lead them accross the lands, through countless battles and victories, and they made a great name for themselves. However, the band of seven adventurers eventually met with disaster, fighting a group of giants threatening Couldren. Four of Kylanes companions died in the fierce fighting, and he himself came close to death before the remaining Wild Hearts fled the battle. In the chase that followed another of his companions perished.
Kylane and his remaining friend made it to Couldren, planning to heal and then return to avenge their comrades, but a group of mercenaries, hearing that the giants were considerably weakened, set out to defeat the clan and claim their treasure.
In a strange way this broke Kylane's spirit, his companions were nearly all gone, and he had no target to unleash his anger on. The one plan he had on reaching couldren was now gone, and he couldn't seem to come up with another one.
After recovering the other remaining Wild Heart set out for home, but Kylane did not, could not contemplate doing anything at all. He ate little, talked to no one, and rarely left the inn that he stayed at, living off the profits of previous adventures. He survived, but did not really live.
This lasted for most of a years, until his money ran out. By that time he had come to terms with what had happened, but still didn't have a plan or purpose. He did odd jobs for merchants and nobles who needed a spell caster, but nothing of any real danger or adventure. He drifted aimlessly through life in this way for another 23 years, seeing the city change around him, but not changing himself.
Eventually Kylane began to emerge from the shell he had built around himself, and time began to chip away at his self pity and anger.
Soon he found himself yearning for adventure once more, to give his life back some meaning, or to finally end it, both ideas held some appeal. Another 2 years had passed, in which time Kylane had began to take more of an interest into the happenings of the city. He began to hear tales of the various adventuring groups, and to observe those in the city.
The Ash Walkers caught his eye for several reasons. For one there was at least one elf in the party, at least one of his own kind. Kylane held the other races no ill will, but new in his heart that Elves were the greatest of the races. Secondly, the party seemed to have no spell caster of any great power, so there was a lack in the party he felt he could fill. And finally, the party was growing in fame and acclaim, and if he would join any group, it would be the best, one known through out the land. He would once again be known.
Kylane is reserved and usually quite, though his anger and loss still burns strongly within him. He is ready to return to life, for all or nothing, power and fame, or to die in battle.

You hear pretty much the same stuff as you had already learnt, and as Krewis relayed to Elendil (above). A lot of it really seems to be rumour, no one really knows for certain, for example, that the tax collectors are taking away people for torture, or that the Guard are conducting raids in the dead of night … its always along the lines of “I know someone who knows someone who said …”

The general sentiment is, of course, very much against the tax hikes, at least to such a great extent. You learn that there have already been tax increases over the last few months, but they have hit mostly businesses and merchants, this is the first time since the rises started that the annual wealth and property taxes are being collected from everyone. Most people agree that with the recent troubles and rumours of more to come (a possible giant invasion being one that people are talking about, attacks by dragons or by demons from the Demonskar being less probable but some people seem to believe it) the government should be doing something, but people don’t want to pay for it. They are generally (with some exceptions) also against the half orc mercenaries (in some cases for reasonable seeming reasons, other times just based on racism) believing that the Guard should be training locals.

Session Summary: The Demonskar Legacy, session 1; The tax riot, the Chisel, and the missing paladin.
23.04.10

For various reasons, Alethian, Elendil, Grom, and Kylane all find themselves attending a demonstration against the tax increases outside Cauldron’s City Hall. Maavu Arlintle, a prominent local merchant speaks out against the taxes and the hiring of half-orc mercenaries to the Town Guard. The crowd is whipped to a fever pitch, and when Sergeant Krewis leads a squad of half-orcs to arrest the merchant, provocateurs within the crowd attack and kill the half orcs. The crowd begins to riot.

Elendil tries to calm the crowd, whilst Kylane, Grom and Alethian work to try to save Krewis from the crowd. Maavu is targeted by hidden archers within the City Hall and then attacked by something that Grom identifies as a Breathdrinker, a summoned assassin from the Elemental Plane of Air. Grom dismisses it from the material plane, and Elendil leads Maavu to safety.

The four heroes, along with Maavu and Krewis hide out in one of Maavu’s buildings whilst the rioters clash with a heavy detachment of guards. Krewis says he will forget that he has seen Maavu, then departs. Maavu explains that he was expecting Alek Tercival to show up to challenge Tearson Skellerang, the commander of the Town Guard. He says that he has more to tell them if they meet him at the Red Head Miner’s Inn in Red gorge - he then departs.

Later in the day the party leave for Redgorge, marching hard and arriving just before nightfall. At the Inn, they are invited to a secret meeting of the Chisel. Present are the apparent leader of the Chisel, known as The Foreman, Maavu, the innkeeper Mikimax, and a bard named Ekaym Smallcask.

The Foreman explains that the Chisel has had suspicions for a while that someone within the Cauldron government is behind at least some of the troubles that have plagued the area, and that they are concerned at the implications of the hiring of the half orc mercenaries. Alek Tercival had approached the group a couple of months ago, saying that he had divine inspiration of a great evil that threatened Cauldron. Together, they came up with the idea of challenging Skellerang under the Law of Peers. However, a week before the challenge was due to take place, Alek travelled west into the jungle to ‘prepare himself’ - and has not returned.

The Foreman knows that Alek had spent a lot of time in the jungles to the west, and had often travelled by river, but did not know exactly where he went. He suggests that the group ask Jenya Urikas for some sort of insight into where he might go.

The next morning, the group travelled back to Cauldron. They heard that the mayor had announced a three month delay to the collection of taxes, had declared Alek’s challenge null and void due to him being possessed by a demon and had offered a 5000gp reward to any who could find him. The city was also offering a reward for Maavu - 2000gp alive or 1000gp dead. Word on the street was that the boarding house where the half orc mercs had been staying had been attacked by some sort of fiery monsters, and the half orcs had been moved to an encampment outside of town.

The group seeks out Jenya, who mentions that Alek often sold antiquities that he found at a shop called Tygot’s Old Things. Tygot has a number of items that Alek has sold to him over the past couple of months. One item, that Tygot calls ‘The Hegemonic Plate’ contains a clue to where Alek has been, a crudely sketched map on the back, showing a location called Vaprak’s Voice which is known to be somewhere along the southern rim of the Demonskar, and a headless demon statue which is known to be along the Red River.

Elendil casts comprehend languages to decipher the writing on the front of the plate. It depicts six armed creatures known as spell weavers using something called Amaranth Elixir to give their ogre slaves greater strength to help them build a ‘planar travel installation’. There also appears to be some sort of numeric code on the plate.

With a lead on Alek’s whereabouts, the group prepare to return to Redgorge.

Experience: given in session.

4 pearls worth 100gp each

You can find out in Redgorge that the headless statue stands on the northern bank of the Red River, about twenty miles or so downstream (into the forest) from town.

The Chisel can lend you a large rowboat if you wish – going with the current you should be able to reach the statue in a matter of hours, half a day or so (it would take a lot longer to get back, against the current). However, no boat is available that would be large enough for you to take mounts or pack animals. This would require you to travel by land (probably following the river bank) which would be a far longer trip, probably taking a day or two (as there is no known trail through the jungle).

The Chisel can also supply you with food and water for your group, up to two week’s worth each (if you want to take more you’ll need to buy it yourself). However, bringing so many supplies you will need to find some way to carry it all.

The Demonskar lies something like twenty to thirty miles from the headless statue, so if this Vaprak’s Voice is indeed near the southern edge of the Demonskar, that might be a journey through the rainforest of a couple of days in each direction.

Liberty's Edge

Male Mothman Expert 5

Between the party’s various knowledge skills, bardic knowledge, gather information checks and just plain asking the Chisel (Ekaym in particular), you can probably get a reasonable idea of what challenges and dangers you might face in your journey to Vaprak’s Voice, although the Demonskar itself and the area around it is somewhat unknown, and the subject of far more rumours than facts.

The climate and temperature out in the rainforest is completely different to what you find in the mountains and Cauldron, only a day’s journey away. It gets hot during the day at this time of the year, but not excessively so – however, the humidity can make travelling through the rainforest wearing armour quite uncomfortable and potentially fatiguing. The rain showers (sometimes storms) that happen almost every afternoon tend to cool things down. Nights can get quite chilly.

The river is generally considered fairly safe with few large or dangerous predators found this close to Redgorge, though snakes are common enough. However, although rare it is not unheard of to encounter crocodiles, piranhas, water dwelling dinosaurs, elemental creatures and water spirits, giant or poisonous frogs, and sometimes stranger creatures that are washed down from the river’s headwaters in the underground lakes below Cauldron.

The rainforest and jungles west of Redgorge are home to the same sort of creatures (some dangerous, some not) that can be found elsewhere in the jungles, although only the toughest and most dangerous creatures venture close to the Demonskar, and as one approaches that place the more typical wildlife tends to give way to far odder and more outlandish and dangerous monsters.

Dangerous rainforest creatures include dinosaurs of various species, baboons, dangerous lizards and snakes, tigers (normal and giant), ground sloths, shambling mounds, vegepygmies, giant wasps, soldier ant swarms, wart hogs (normal and dire), ankhegs and bullettes. The local Olman peoples tend to avoid the region, but tribes of various other humanoids and giants inhabit the area. Gnolls are quite widespread, and tribes of orcs, ogres and several species of giants can be found living in the hills and canyons around the Demonskar itself. Creatures of extraplanar and fiendish origin (mostly demons) are found close the Demonskar itself. Although several of the canyons that branch off the Demonskar have been explored and documented, no civilised person in living memory has returned from an expedition into the Demonskar itself, so what might be found within is largely based on guesswork.

Spoiler:
Sounds good about Kylanes background, oerhaps suspected the involvement of the mercanary troop considering their speed to capatilise on the situation. They may have tipped of the giants and perhaps given them some unseen aid, then turned on the giants when they were considerably weakened.

Alethian will attempt to seek out Jill on the night of their return from Red Gorge to seek out Jenya.

He congratulates her on the success of the attack at the demonstaration against the half orcs, and the suspention of taxation.

He then asks who payed for the job he completed involving Maavus wharehouse.
Assuming she wont want to give him that info, he offers to tell her the whereabouts of Alec Tersival in return.

Brash (Alethian):

Spoiler:

“Oh, I’m hardly going to tell you that,” replies Jil. “Our clients require discretion, and frankly I don’t trust you enough. You still don’t know whether you want to be a thief or a hero.” She looks at you with hard eyes for a moment, then leans close and winks. “Let’s just say that our friend Maavu has some enemies in high places. Don’t push more than that, it’s dangerous to know some things ... just as it’s dangerous to get in the way.”

She snorts when you mention Alek Tercival. “Why would I want to know where he is? The only thing I’d want to deal with less than a paladin is a demon possessed paladin. And I’m hardly in a position to collect the reward now am I? But is that what you and your friends have been about these past few days?” She looks at you thoughtfully, then her expression turns serious again.

“The question is, if you’re going after him, are you doing it to rescue him, or simply collect the reward. Alethian, I am serious when I say you need to decide whether you’re a thief or a hero. You need to decide – and make it very clear through your actions if you renounce this whole hero deal – sooner than you think. In case you haven’t noticed, heroes that start getting too powerful or too popular don’t have a long life expectancy in this town. I’m serious, look into it. For some reason I like you ... I’d hate to see you get dead.”

Before you can ask any more questions she stands quickly and leaves, quickly blending away into the shadows.

Any ideas as to whether you will travel into the jungle by boat, on foot, or with mounts? So that I can better prepare for next game.

Do we have any idea how practical mounts will be, especially after leaving the river and heading inland? Is the jungle reputed to be to dense for them?

Alec didn't use a mount so I guess we wont need them, perhaps by boat and then foot would be best?

Going by boat would makes sense; it will get us there quicker and possibly by-pass some of the dangers of the forest. Getting it back up river might be a little more difficult, but let's deal with that when we get to it. I don't think mounts would offer any advantage (and would probably be a disadvantage at times) in the forest.

Not sure about equipment. Some anti-venon and perhaps a neutralise poison scroll or two might come in handy for some of the nasties in the rainforest.

Against giants and demons, well an army would definitely come in handy! but short of that, maybe some scrolls that will allow us to overcome damage reduction (for the demon element) and a couple of more powerful offensive spells (fireball, lightening bolt etc) for the giants could be handy. Potions of heroism (and similar) might also be a good idea to give us a boost in big fights.

Oh, and nearly forgot. Should definitely take at least 10 scrolls of Grease, just in case we encounter any Raptors : )

A quick ask around reveals that Alek did not take a mount into the jungle (he nearly always left by boat). However, he’s a paladin, he might be able to summon a magical mount!

There’s actually surprisingly little undergrowth in most of the rainforest, as the heavy over-head canopy reduces the sunlight, restricting growth on the forest floor. However, there are defiantly jungle areas that are very overgrown, and the terrain is not necessarily level – lots of little streams and creeks, gullys, hills etc.

You can pick up antivenom and stuff like that. Magical gear, I’ll need to put together a list of likely usueful items available at Skies – she doesn’t for example have 10 scrolls of Grease!

was going to put it to Elendil, but will give local knowledge a whirl first in regards to jills comment, do I know of any adventuring groups based in Couldren that have met suspicious deaths?
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16 Hmmm is it possible to take 10 on local knowledge?
