Amazon.com Weirdness?

The Exchange

I just noticed this today: a LOT of books, overnight, have gone from being sold directly by Amazon (and thus, eligible for Amazon Prime) to only being available through their marketplace.

I'm hoping that they change this; my wife accidentally signed up for the Amazon Prime trial a few months ago and forgot to cancel before they charged us and hooked us for a year. I've been taking advantage of it and it's been pretty nice, but in the last 24 hours, about 75 planned purchases sitting on wishlists appear to have mysteriously gone out of stock.

Does anybody else see this or am I alone?

Browsing around, the recent disappearances include the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, Campaign Setting, and Bestiary.

There was/is also a big data fishing scam being perpetrated using fake Amazon "order canceled" e-mails and such. I got one of these e-mails, and it looked off to me, so I call Amazons customer service phone number. They said don't open it. They are aware of it, and they're working on it. FYI

!

That's not good. We'll look into it. Thanks for letting us know!

I bet it has something to do with this. Diamond Book Distribution is our distributor for the book trade, and thus for Amazon.

Confirmed. Amazon and Diamond are working on it.

Something needs to be done about their regular sales.

I had to cancel all my subscriptions when I lost my job, but I do some online surveys and I got over 20 of them in two weeks. That was enough for almost $50 in Amazon.com gift cards. I ordered all the February & March books, but they never shipped.

Amazon kept saying they had not been released, then that they had sold out and finally that they could not find any more. So I canceled them.

It is kind of ironic that a company that made it big as a bookseller can't seem to sell books anymore.

I had just ordered a Core Rulebook and a Bestiary, as well as preordered a Gamemastery guide, and was disappointed to receive this:

Hello,

Our records indicate you recently ordered 'Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Core Rulebook
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: The Pathfinder Bestiary
Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: GameMastery Guide'. Unfortunately, due to a pricing error, we sold many more than expected. In fact, we completely sold out — we don't have any in stock right now, and we're not even sure if we'll be able to get more.

As a result, we've had to cancel your order. I realize this is disappointing news, and I'm so sorry for any inconvenience this causes.

You may want to check our website from time to time to see if this item is available. If anyone is selling it, you'll see a "More Buying Choices" box on the product detail page; if it's not available from any sellers, you might see an "Order it used" or "Alert me" link. "Order it used" allows you to place a pre-order for the item in case another seller lists the item for sale later. "Alert me" allows you to sign up so we can e-mail you when Amazon has stock available for purchase.

I'm sorry I don't have better news. We hope to see you again soon.

Hello,

We wanted to follow up on a recent message we sent about the cancellation of your recent order.

To recap: Due to a pricing error, we sold many more graphic novels than expected. In fact, we completely sold out — we don't have any in stock right now, and we're not sure when we'll be able to get more.

We're sorry for any frustration the issue may have caused, and have applied a $25 promotional certificate to your account.

You can use it the next time you order an item shipped and sold by Amazon.com. You'll see your available promotional balance at checkout--this amount will be applied to your next order automatically without entering a claim code.

I hope this helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Sincerely,

Customer Service

I'm happy they are providing me with some recompense, but there's nothing else on Amazon I want to buy now. It seems as though they are being mostly honest about the issue, though I am unsure of whether they are actually out of stock on everything I ordered. The saying goes... "If it seems to good to be true, it probably is"

We're told they have to do a title-by-title audit of everything they source from Diamond Books and Diamond Comics.

We did ship a large restock of Core Rulebooks and Bestiaries to Diamond not that long ago, so I expect that they'll find they have sellable stock soon enough.

What about the Campaign Setting book? Is it out-of-print?

I couldn't find it here in the Paizo store, either.

I don't know whether or not Amazon might have unsold inventory, but we are no longer selling the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting to distribution, as we have fewer than 200 copies remaining. You can find it here, while supplies last.
