question : shadowdancers and some other enemies get Hide in Plain sight. which requires an area of shadow to hide in or be near in order to use stealth to hide without needing something to hide behind or concealment to hide in.

but what happens when the ovserver has darkvision? am i right in that darkvision is black & white only, and doesn't have "shadows" to hide in? can a creature with hide in plain sight requiring shadows not hide from someone with darkvision?

Hide in Plain Sight (Su): A shadowdancer can use the Stealth skill even while being observed. As long as she is within 10 feet of an area of dim light, a shadowdancer can hide herself from view in the open without anything to actually hide behind. She cannot, however, hide in her own shadow.

( to someone with darkvision, if you're 10 ft away from them, and their darkvision extends to 60 ft. there is no area of 'dim light' relative to the viewer. if there was a torch nearby the enemy could hide in a patch of dim light, relative to someone with regular vision or low light vision, but those patches of light are subjective. since the areas of light would change depending on the vision of each observer. )

has anyone encountered this before?

So we have been around this mulberry bush.

or around this rosey ring

So what is the official verdict on this?

I remeber it being a big thing with darkvision b/4 in 2.0, suposedly in 2.0 you could hide being aware of temperature variations and distorting and hiding your emanations.

Think of Drow rogues trying to SA another Drow.
