P.E.A.C.H. Holy Symbol of Selective Channeling

Homebrew and House Rules

I was looking for an item that would allow clerics with low charisma scores to be able to selectively channel. I didn't want a `Feat in a can` like item so I based it off the these: Metamagic Rods, Gloves of Arrow Snaring, and Ring of Evasion.

-----------------

Holy Symbol of Selective Channeling

Aura moderate necromancy*; CL 7th

Slot -; Price 7,000 gp; Weight 1 lb.

DESCRIPTION

This silvered holy symbol is fashioned for a specific deity and works as a divine focus for followers. Twice per day, the wearer can act as if he had the Selective Channeling feat (see Feats for details), even if he does not meet the prerequisites for the feat.

The symbol only works for followers the the deity the symbol was created for.

The symbol bestows one negative level on any creature for each alignment that is opposite the deity the symbol was created for (i.e. if the deity was Lawful Good, then a Chaotic Good character would have one negative level, but a Chaotic Evil character would have two). The negative level remains as long as the symbol is in the possession of the symbol and disappears when the symbol is no longer in their possession. This negative levels never results in actual level loss, but it cannot be overcome in any way (including restoration spells) while the symbol in their possession.

* The aura matches the alignment of the deity the symbol was created for.

CONSTRUCTION

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, creator must be a 7th-level follower of the symbol's diety; Cost 3,500 gp

Pricing is... maybe slightly low, but reasonable, if it used up a slot. Non-slot doubles typically.

One problem however is that, as written, this would only be useful to clerics with a 12+ Charisma - the feat only lets you select Charisma modifier targets to exclude from your channel.

Agreed. The price for a Ring of Evasion is 4,000 gp so I doubled that and then reduced it by 1,000 gp for the final price since this would only be useful for clerics with the Channeling ability.

You are correct sir.

It might be easier to create a talisman of protection that a cleric can infuse with power (using one of his channeling uses, directly into the talisman) and can then be gifted to an ally, who will then be shielded from the channel energy uses of that specific cleric as long as he wears the talisman.

If another Cleric channels energy, the talisman wearer will be affected normally, the Talisman would just serve as a 'friendly fire' item that allows him to 'attune it' to his particular channelings, and then bestow upon allies to protect them, for when he wants to cut loose.

This could be written up as a cheap Wondrous Item, or even worked up as a Feat, that requires the Cleric to use a silver holy symbol of his faith, that he powers with his own Channelings, as above (with the cost of the item replaced by his eating of a Feat to learn the technique to create these protective items). In the latter case, the subject to be protected would have to wear the holy symbol to get the protection, and it would still only defend against the channelings of the priest who charged it / created it.

Another limiting option would be to require the Cleric to recharge the item each day, expending a use of Channel Energy to empower X number of these talismans. He'll start out each day down one Channeling use, but be able to blast away without fear of nuking his own allies.

And if the Talisman is snatched away / stolen / aquired by an enemy? That enemy is immune to your Channel Energy damage. Oops. That could be a plot point, if the Cleric has some long-term foe who has noticed his tendency to blast away with the channel energy attacks, and went through the effort of aquiring one of his protective talismans...

Interesting. Reminds me of 3.5 PH2 `Divine Ward` feat that you use up turn attempts to attune your healing abilities to the range of `Close` instead of touch.

Hmm...but the item was designed for low charisma cleric (12), and with having to use up a Channel to attune one ally, well, that'll mean only one or two more channelling attempts if I understand you correctly.

I appreciate the input. I may use something like that in my campaign!!!
