Would someone under the effect of a silence spell....

Rules Questions

be affected by "Holy Word"?

For game purposes, I have always assumed the "Holy Word" spell is a speoken word that carries power with it. What is the target cannot hear the Holy Word?

I guess it works on undead. Still....

Opinions?

Silence spell:Creatures in an area of a silence spell are immune to sonic or language-based attacks, spells, and effects.

Holy Word: School evocation [good, sonic]

Therefore I would say yes.

I think Spacelard meant to say the creature in the area of a Silence spell is NOT affected by Holy Word as it is carries the sonic descriptor. Silence is in fact the defense against spells such as Holy Word/Blasphemy/Word of Chaos/Dictum.

Correct. Tired...

I have a problem with a 2nd level spell being able to completely protect against any sonic attack. Heck, even a wall of force doesn't do that!

I have split the silence spell into three pieces, one each at 1st level, 2nd level, and 3rd level. There are saves and other differences depending on the level chosen.

There are not many creatures immune to sonic attacks which makes sonic damage more effective, so perhaps it should therefore be easier to protect against. But it's the PCs who win big in that case as most creatures are not spellcasters and won't have access to silence.

If I could, I would post the picture where the guy goes "Not this #&$* again."

Why, EXACTLY, would and should not Silence stop sonic attacks - OF ANY LEVEL? "Here, let me attack you with sound in the area of no sound!"
It would be like hypnotizing a blind man: "Look deeply into my eyes with your blank unseeing stare!"

Then I guess you don't really want an answer since you apparently already know what the argument is. :)
