We had a question come up last session. Some characters have been inflicted by a disease that affects con and wis damage each day (im not sure which disease it is as he has not told us yet). My pc has a form of restoration to fix some of this but the gm is arguing that the character would be unaware of the ability damage. Now I know that my character would be unaware of the fact that he is diseased with out some spell help, but I was pretty sure that he would know if his stats were being damaged. Could you guys please give some input. Thanx

Sure he'd be aware of it. 'Symptoms' is a useful word :)
For physical stats ailments - he's feeling lethargic, and his skin is florid/yellow/pasty/clammy.
For mental stats - migraines leading to an inability to focus, prolonged drowsiness etc.
Whilst I would accept the GM's counter argument that he doesn't want to specify the exact stat loss, I think it a reasonable compromise that there would be given a description of the current symptoms, and some degree of insight as to their severity.

Yes, characters are aware that they have taken ANY kind of damage (ability damage, ability drain, negative levels, hp damage, what-ev-er), unless the ability that gave them that damage specifically states otherwise. There are some things that deal damage but force you to save to realize that you've taken damage, but they're very very rare in general.

Yep - your DM has said the character is unaware, therefore he is unaware.
Now, outside of the context of the game that you are playing in, it seems reasonable that someone affected with a disease that was causing serious physical/mental effects would show symptoms of some kind. If so, I'd throw increasingly obvious hints to the players regarding the symptoms until they decided to get the afflicted character checked by someone competent to diagnose what was going on.
Edit: Ninjas are thick on the ground tonight!
