Oh well, at least I got to enjoy it on my 2 hour lunch that I'm putting down as 30 minutes...
Then good for you. :)
My company has fully embraced the idea that salaried means you can work at any time of the day that they "need" you to, so we've got project managers taking phone calls at 2 in the morning to deal with problem sites. I get funny looks when I say I would not appreciate that.

Yep. A lot of the salaried people here are here all the time. Management has all but told them that as salaried employees, the company should be their life. My desire to get one of those salaried jobs has decreased significantly.
Plus, I could be taking advantage of OT. Not that I do, because I tend to put a priority on my personal time...

Ok. Homestar Runner has changed their intro page a bit, but they still haven't updated the rest of their site since December.

Thirty years of 24x7 pager/phone carrying (even on vacation!), on-call, and 10-18 hour work days is why I'm still burned out even after four years away from IT. It wasn't helped by the folks who showed up at my desk at 4:30 saying: "I've worked all day on this and can't figure it out. It needs to be fixed by the 3 a.m. batch run. I think the (*)compiler's broken(*) so it's your problem. I'm going home." The idea of going back gives me jibblies.
(*) Compilers breaking are very low probability.

I work extra when I feel like I've fallen behind on something. I just find it hard to get enthusiastic when it's an expectation, and the person getting a bonus by forcing a product out the door 2 months early isn't the one up at all hours of the night basically dealing with the fallout of his decision. Grr.

I'm a software engineer, so I get the same kinds of requests/demands. I'm in the middle of my burn out. In fact, a lot of people where I work are getting burned out.

Wait a minute - cake isn't good for you either. Oh well. I just compare every snack to a Snickers. If it's better for me than a Snickers, then it's okay.
I just heard on NPR that snickers are as good for you as power bars, and taste better. Snickers and Mountain Dew > Power bar and Gatorade
Edit: They actually said they're as bad as snickers, but I'm using the transitive property :p

You must have missed the big age discussions. Actually 30 years is overstating, considering that I've been out of it 4. It's more like 28 years with a 2 year break for school. So I exaggerate!

Sure. Those power bars are meant for people getting a hard workout. That said, a Snickers probably does work just as well. However, if you are working out, Mountain Dew is probably a bad choice, since caffeine dehydrates you.
It makes me think of that scene in one of the Will Farrell movies where he is running, and refreshes himself by chugging a bottle of milk, and then says "Ugh. Milk was probably a bad choice."

I'm 40 going on 41 next month. (I know I'm not the oldest around here, but it's hard to tell ages from people's avatars. Gender too for that matter.)

I was a mainframe systems programmer then took management of systems and operations. It's all bad - we're the ones who get called when ANYthing is amiss. Of course, standards seem to be a lot more slack now. I'm amazed at how many U.S. websites go down for maintenance during the day. Our maintenance hours were midnight to 3 a.m. Daytime downtime was a luxury. Slackers! :)
Good luck, man. I feel for you.

My brother has the original gun Megatron -- the one that I was very surprised that they made since it still looks surprisingly real.
