This issue has cropped up in our games of late.
I can see the need for simplicity in only allowing the Wayfinder to be available as "always available" but there are a lot of mundane items which it would be great to have available for first level characters.
Right now you basically either need to play 2-4 modules before you can pick up any of the extra-legal mundane items for play. This isn't that big of a deal, except in one particular instance...
If you start your character with exotic weapon proficiency with a weapon out of the Campaign Sourcebook, such as the Sabertooth Sabre, in terms of RAW out of the PFS Campaign Guidelines you can't actually buy that weapon until you've gotten enough prestige points.
So as a suggestion, having another line added into the equipment section of the guidelines saying something to the effect that taking the exotic weapon proficiency would unlock the ability to purchase that specific weapon would help smooth over the most relevant gap in the purchase of mundane items.

To be clear, the wayfinder isn't a mundane item. It's magical. But, yes, it is on the always available list.
The intent of the always available list is that any mundane (completely non-magical) item from legal sources is considered always available. I'll mull over the language of how to phrase the adjustment and altar the rule to be more clear in 2.2.
For now, the RAW in the Guide stand.
