I really think the whole trend of tablets coming out this year will make pdfs that much more viable. The most obvious one would probably be the iPad, but for those who for whatever reason dont want Apple's offering, there are about 4 or 5 other choices that should be available this year. I personally am looking forward to the Notion Ink Adam.
While they aren't e-readers, Ive used both an iPod and a laptop for pdfs, and while they both have their use, they arent perfect. The ipod has a small screen which means a lot of scrolling, and the laptop is hard to pass around. The tablet will fill in that spot in the middle, easy to read with the large screen while still being handheld. Im eager to actually sit down and try one of these tablets first though.

I've got a Kindle (basic version, not the DX) that I keep a lot of PDFs on. For the day-to-day running of my character, I tend to have the major books in print form for whatever I need (so when I'm using my Totemist, I bring my copy of Magic of Incarnum, for example), but I find it useful to keep PDF copies of "obscure" stuff handy, just in case somebody is looking for a specific spell or feat from a random book.
So far, the Kindle is nice for certain things, but it's actually much easier to (a) open straight to the ToC/Index, then (b) flip to the page in question with a print book than in a PDF.
