PFRPG rulebook states:
Bane: A bane weapon excels against certain foes. Against a designated foe, the weapon's enhancement bonus is +2 better than its actual bonus. [...]
Can the total bonus exceed +5?
Does a +5 sword of dragon bane act as a +7 sword against dragons? Thanks.
It's +7, because it's a special ability:
"Special abilities count as additional bonuses for determining the market value of the item, but do not modify attack or damage bonuses (except where specifically noted). A single weapon cannot have a modified bonus (enhancement bonus plus special ability bonus equivalents) higher than +10"

Let me see if I understand this right.
I am wielding a +5 sword, dragon bane, of speed (total enhancement bonus +10) against a dragon. The enhancement bonus against the dragon is +7 (even though that would make for a temporary total of +12), since this comes from a special ability.
Correct?

The "Bane" quality is only a +1 equivalent ability. A +1 bane vs. type X sword is a +2 equivalent weapon. This means that you can have a maximum (non-Epic) weapon that's +10 equivalent, so a +5 bane vs creature type X, keen, speed weapon is allowable.
Where the confusion comes in is the effective bonus to attack and damage that weapon has against creature type X. Its effective enhancement bonus increases by an additional +2 bonus to attack and damage (net +7 for a +5 bane weapon), and does an additional plus 2d6 damage (the increased plus damage multiplies on a confirmed critical, the extra dice of damage do not.)
Incidentally, at least in 3.5 and thus I assume still true in Pathfinder, this increased enhancement bonus allows a +4 (functions against its target creature type as +6) or +5 (functions as +7) bane weapon to overcome DR/epic, at least against creatures of its targeted type. (So in other words, your paladin definitely wants Bane (Outsider (Evil)) added to his Holy Avenger if he can get it.)

You are right, though I do not agree a bane weapon of + 4 'should' overcome epic DR.

Correct. Thank you for pointing that out!

Interesting thought. I had not considered that. It looks like it would make bane weapon on par with epic weapon against specific targets. I am not sure I would endorse that.
