NPC's to Introduce in Burnt Offerings (APs 2-6)

Rise of the Runelords

Just as a helpful reminder, does anyone have any recommendations for NPC's to introduce from future adventure path's into Burnt Offerings.

Farmer Grump - AP#2, pg 16

Kaven - AP#3, pg

Im not sure exactly what you are asking....

Do you mean what NPCs that turn up in the later books could be introduced early? Maybe to help with the continuity?

Yeah, basically, who would be good to introduce to the PC's early, instead of just introducing them in the adventure they pop up in.

Justice Ironbriar - I had him come to Sandpoint to try Nualia. The players were happy when he sentenced her to death.

I only did Ironbriar as well, he sentenced both Tsuto and Naulia to death when the PC's took them to Magnimar for trial at the end of Burnt Offerings. And as you'd expect, he sprung them and used them for his own gains. :)

I'm not really sure about other NPCs to bring in early. The farmers from near Sandpoint are fairly well known to the townsfolk. Everyone from HMM need to be there for some time for the story to work imo.

How about Rogors Craesby?

Farmer Grump is good NCP to tell PCs about Sandpoint Devil of course with tankard of good beer in front of him. Showing that he is bit of drunkard make his story about moving scarecrows unbelievable.

Unfortunately, my heroes (still in BO) have already found and killed the SPD (some AMAZING teamwork and dice rolls) and they treat any talk of moving monsters as something to investigate...

But I like the idea of introducing both of them early.

Scarab Sages

I introduced two organizations early to my group, the Hellknights from Magnimar, and the Black Arrows. I did this because I wanted to establish their power and capability early on so none of my players did anything foolish without a clear understanding of whom they were dealing with.

I had a Hellknight ship come to town and blockade the harbor while the Hellknights searched the town for a fugitive. Sheriff Balor and the mayor were not happy, but since Magnimar is the overarching legal authority, they had to cooperate. The party followed the knights around town and watched them but did not engage. The druid in the group did run into the fugitive and actually assisted him in escaping. Wait till an inquisitor and his group of Hellknights come to town to interrogate folks as to exactly how the fugitive eluded the search.

This encounter also allowed me to introduce some mystery to Madame Mvashti, who in my game is a witch. One of the Hellknights tried to break down her door when she would not answer and was zapped by hex wards placed on the door. Some of the party saw this and now are curious as to just what she is about.

I also had a group of Black arrows come into town for supplies after chasing down a group of rogue ogrekin who were migrating into the forest near Thistletop. In my game, Ameiko was an ex-adventurer who retired and no one knows exactly why, but it wasn't because she was rich and happy. Actually a Black Arrow patrol rescued her and one other of her party of 8 adventurers from the Grauls, and suddenly Sandpoint looked a lot nicer. The Black arrows come into town and dine at the Rusty Dragon, and she serves them whatever they want on the house. Since the party regularly eats at the Rusty Dragon (one of them is a bouncer there), they asked about who the grim group of men were, and voila, now the party knows about the Black Arrows.

I'm totally ganking the Hellknight Refugee and Black Arrows Rusty Dragon stuff. Good info.

James, the link is to a more detailed accounting of what took place in the above mentioned encounters in case you are interested...

It is the 2nd post in the thread by me..

Some other NPC's you might want to introduce in Burnt Offerings:

- Crade Hambley (the greedy farmer who's a victim of the ghouls in adventure 2) and/or his family.
- Some farmers who will be slain/captured by the ghouls in adventure 2 (and turned into scarecrows)
- Some villagers who will be captured by stone giants in adventure 4.
- Doctor Habe, the warden of the nearby asylum.
- One or all 3 of the con men killed by the Skinsaw Man in adventure 2 and/or their body guard who later ends up at the asylum.
- Corporal Basvear (one of the guards who dies while exploring the lower level of the catacombs of wrath at the start of adventure 5).

One of my PC's spent their youth in Habe's Sanatarium, so that one will be easy.

Banny Harker and the older Vinder girl I'm introducing at a dinner party that Shayliss is throwing with her PC lover.

I definitely don't want to just introduce characters just to gank them, so ... wow alot of npcs get killed off.

I'm going to have Titus Scarnetti pay the PC's to say that they are in his employ to "Save the Good People where local government had failed."

Another PC is working for Jubyral. Beating up locals and stealing stuff from the church.

Madam Mvishasti(sp) she's a bit of a mystery to me, one of the PC's is playing a Fey so they talk some.

I'm going to need to read up on your suggestions Moonbeam, is Corporal Basvear the only named npc that goes into the hole? He would make a good candidate for a friend to the townguard PC.

I believe so, yes. But I don't have the adventure with me at the moment.

Lord Mayor Grobaras.

He feels like he appears out of nowhere at the end of #2, and he turns out to be such a decadent political nitwit I wish I had more screentime for him. I'm actually having him visit in person after the player clear Ft Rannick just to give him more presence. He's gonna be all flustered that his magician's teleport put them a few miles outside of Turtleback — he'll be grumbling about the long journey that "should have been avoidable"... all the while he's being carried around in a palanquin!

Oh man. Yeah. Get him in somehow as soon as they get to Magnimar, and treasure every moment with that fat bastard.

I think I missed the Lord Mayor Gorobas (sp) and Rogors Craegsby (sp) got just about all of the other ones.

I had a moment of fear when I thought that Kaven was going to sleep with one of the PC's. They were heavily interested in the strange Rune symbols at the time... finding one on Kaven would have been.. interesting at best, lethal at worst. Though similar tatoos can be found on most Varisian spellcasters.

I don't have anything to add -- just wanted to say thanks for this great topic! I'm currently running "Burnt Offerings," and I definitely want to plant as many seeds as I can.
