Would you care if your DM switched the Greatsword's damage to d12 (from 2d6)?
You would have a 3 times better chance of rolling a 12. (Or a 1) Would that offset the nice safe average of 7 you get with 2d6?
What if all 1's rolled counted as a 2?
With 2d6, you only have a 2.8 chance of rolling a 12 or a 2, and a 16.7% of rolling a 7.

I'd like a reason to use each of my dice. It's part of what makes D&D (or if you want to call it Pathfinder) fun to me. Multiple dice, each with different uses. I hate single dice systems. In many cases the creators of single dice systems describe that as a "feature" whereas I think of it as "boring".

I'd mildly frown at it. As its an average damage loss. If the player wanted to roll a d12 instead I would be fine with it.
If you want to balance a d12 to 2d6, you reroll 1s (or make 1's=7) on the d12, and that puts the average roll right back on a 7, with the same minimum and maxium damage outputs.

The d12 gives you a three times better chance to roll a 12 and double the chance of rolling an 11 over 2d6. The chance to roll a 12 on 2d6 is less than 3%. I wondered if increasing the chance to over 8% would entice you to change, if I offset the chance to roll a 1.
Would Maezer's option of changing 1s into 7s, make you willing to try the change?
No is a perfectly acceptable answer, that's why I asked, I appreciate your feedback.

I use d12 / 3 for d4s... They're better, d4 architecture sucks. Actually I have a friend who has a d12 with 3 sides of 1-4 on the die. Need to find those :).
Even with 1s as 7s, 2d6 is better... you want the predictable consistancy. BUT, d12 would be more fun and less cumbersome, so I say yes.
You could run half your dice on d12s.
d12/2 = 1d6
d12/3 = 1d4
d12/4 = 1d3
If would be cool to have an appropriately painted set like that.
To be honest though I like using a mix of dice also. d6 and d6 get lots of love, d10s get the % rolls. Obviously the d20 gets the lions share and I'm ok with that. d4s don't roll properly so I'd be ok getting rid of those.

Agreed. Part of what attracted me to the game many years ago, sadly perhaps, was that I was fascinated by the fact that it used all these strange polyhedral dice. And I still like using them. ;)
Heck, I once made up a bunch of cheap but effective miniature wargame rules that used d12s for the main mechanic, just so they'd see some use.
And I, too, despise one-die systems.

What I got from that is that he wanted to use the greataxe, but the DM gave him a magical greatsword rather than a magical greataxe as loot.
I mean, sure, he likes the greataxe, but if you're starting to meet a lot of DR foes, and you need magic weapons to contribute, are you going to choose to carry a mundane greataxe (even if you prefer it) or a magical greatsword, if those are your only choices?
Of course, in this case, if someone likes a certain weapon, I think it's part of the DM's job to make sure they can keep using that type as they level up. I mean, if I saw someone using a longsword and shield, and really developing the whole 'swordsman' thing, I wouldn't have the ONLY magic weapons that showed up be maces and Bohemian earspoons .... =P

I like the idea of using the d12 for the d4 and I've even thought about using 2d12/2 for the greatsword, to satisfy my d12 cravings.
Or....
for my next campaign, I could have the villains be a tribe of half-orcs.
And, I could tell my players the height of all the half-orc druids wielding greataxes coated with sassone leaf residue and reading scrolls of control weather that are above their current casting level while their alligator animal companions attack them with tail slaps.

12 Phases in a Turn. Coincidence? I think not.
Hero System reference. I use a giant d12 to keep track of which Phase it is.
My friend Matt is a serious Hero afficianado. He actually rolls a d12 every phase, to see which phase it is. If you've got Speed of 4 (acting on 3, 6, 9, and 12) and he rolls a "9", you get to go. When he rolls a "12" just about everybody goes. It adds a level of unpredicability he likes, while still allowing Speedier characters to act more often, over the long run. It also cuts down on some of the bookwork he has to keep track of, which is always a plus for him.
