Great Science Fiction Music

Grand Lodge

Ok, I am looking to run a science fiction game and am looking for some decent science fiction music to help set the tone. I figure many of you are likely to have far more knowledge on this than me. What is some great science fiction music that meets these two requirements. Also, I am unsure of the exact tone that I am going to go for with the game yet so just post for all styles.

1. No lyrics
2. I'm not looking for easily identifiable music such as Star Wars or Star Trek.

Suggestions?

Liberty's Edge

There's a British prog-rock band from the late 60s called HAwkwind that, for the most part, should fit the bill.

There ARE others, I'll do some looking.

Battle star galactica TV soundtracks (seasons 1-4) are about $10 on itunes (15$ for season 4)

Good for Sci-fi and fantasy.

Aliens is great too, also the soundtrack to any sci-fi video games. (I like the riddick one)

Grand Lodge

the blade runner soundtrack is legendary.

You can't go wrong with The Day the World Stood Still (the original movie, not the remake)

I've used the soundtrack to Akira before. It's a weird fusion of electronica with some traditional Japanese influence thrown in. It worked well for games like Cyberpunk and Shadowrun.

The Children of Dune soundtrack is really good. Check out a group called Vas, vocalist Azam Ali. Very exotic sound; I don't know how it's classified, New Age maybe. Some lyrics, but I think mostly Fremen, so it doesn't really register when you listen (unless you happen to speak Fremen). I think it is perfect for exotic sci-fi involving weird aliens or alien worlds.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Brain Salad Surgery, particularly Karn Evil 9. Williams just about stole this album for star wars, just like he did steal Copeland's Appalachian Spring for the last inaugural. Speaking of Copeland and Emerson Lake and Palmer, their version of Hoedown works good for a scifi setting, as does their fanfare for the common man and you may want to check out what they did to and for, Moussorgsky's pictures at an exhibition.
