Something fishy here. I mean, after about the 3rd time fixing the same tooth, you'd think the dude would wise up. He didn't switch dentists because he was "embarrassed"? Fine, give him twice more. But 71 times is completely beyond the pale, in a "something doesn't add up here" kind of way.
+1
I was trying to wrap my head around the idea of continuing to return to someone that isn't doing the job right the first time. Yes, problems can occur that mandate follow-up visits, but that many times?
Heck, I remember the first time I needed fillings as a child. The doctor got impatient (no pun intended) with me moving while he was drilling. The only reason I was moving was because he kept hitting the nerve...you try keeping a nine year old to keep still through that. Once he finished the procedure, my dad got us out of there and promptly found another dentist on our insurance plan to get my other filling done.

Ummm, I think NOT being a dentist might make it a little difficult to be a "good" dentist.
All jokes aside, one nasty toothache will make you beg for anyone with a pair of pliers. I had the joy of having my jaw wired shut this spring for a while, and while it was NO FUN, the alternative was much worse! There is a reason that they have been doing jaw surgery since the ancient Egyptians.

It all started with finding two cavities. One was more serious than the other, but I thought I could put them off until I got a couple of important things done, because they hadn't bothered me at all. Then, the worse of the two immediately went nuts. And nothing can be done at once, so it's get a temp filling, then get a root canal with another temp filling, then it's come back in to have the crown made, then it come back another time to set the crown...geez, can't this all just be done at once!?! This morning was the root canal, and they had to zap the heck out of that tooth to finally get it to go dead. Crazy pain. Thankfully, I'm feeling pretty okay tonight.

Uggg! I have had two root canals, and while not as bad as some people say, they are still rough. I'm guessing that this is an upper tooth?
For some reason, I found that the root canal affected my mental state more then other dental work. I don't know why, but I recall feeling depressed after the session.
The only things I can recommend; keeping your eyes open and doing your best to focus your attention on anything but the pain. Also, often the dentist can just give you more Novocaine if things are hurting. Just because you can deal with the pain, doesn't mean you have to.
If you are having pain in between visits, grab a little bottle of clove oil. It is a natural local anesthetic that works wonders when you just need to take the edge off.
Good Luck!

Yeah, it was upper, and once he poked my gum with enough of whatever it was he kept shooting in there, I was good. Much of the time he wanted my eyes closed, I guess because stuff was flying out of my mouth as he ground and drilled and wrecked merry havoc to my poor old ivories. Thanks for the tips--I'd never heard that about olive oil.
