After The Holidays Turkey Suggestions

Okay, so I have a turkey that somebody gave me that I'm cooking for dinner tonight. Any suggestions on how I should cook it? The wife already vetoed deep fried.

Turducken.

Dark Archive

The wife says that creeps her out. I do have a recipe to make my own turduken though.

Why does it creep her out? Either that or just rename it Frankenfowl. :D

Dark Archive

I think it's the whole using meat to stuff other meat thing. She's not too fond of duck either.

Well, if you do try to deep fry it, are you going to do it outdoors? Just don't blow anything up!

Dark Archive

If I was going to deep fry it, I would break it down and cook it like fried chicken.

Ah, but that's no fun. It would be exciting to see that sucker launch into the sky like dropping mentos into a coke bottle. :P

Dark Archive

True it would not.

If your going to cut it up you might as well throw it on the grill.

But since this is a David Fryer creation, just deep frying it isn't enough. You have to throw in something unique to the palate in the mix. You're simply above just mere deep frying. Rise above your surname. :P

I have considered that too. The high is supposed to be 24 degrees today, so it's not an attractive plan.

I already have a nice spice rub prepared.

What's in the rub, Emeril?

Dark Archive

Nope, it's my own blend of chili powder, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, lemon pepper, allspice, cayanne, and salt. Not sure of the proportions because I just sort of eyeball it.

I was actually calling you Emeril. :D

I bet you're a big fan of the Food Network. Did you catch the shows last Sunday night with the iron chef cookoffs and the premiere of the best of worst cooks reality show?

Dark Archive

I saw the cookoff, and I wish I had a garden like that. Watched Cold Case instead of Worst Chefs. My wife is always annoyed when I solve the crime before the show does.

We ended up watching Brothers & Sisters, but DVR'ed the Worst Chefs show to watch later.

I love crime shows, but I had to make compromises with tv viewing so I stick with Law and Order(s) and Criminal Minds (though I hear they may make a spin off from that!).

When my wife turns on Brothers and Sisters I go to bed.

Heh. I only started watching it two months ago. Main reason is that Nora (Sally Field) is sooooooo my woman's mother. But watching that gets me out of watching Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.

Ooh, I almost forgot; I watch The Closer on TNT too.

Dark Archive

See for me, if they dumped Sally Field, Callista Flockheart, and Rob Lowe I could watch it. But for some reason, those three characters get on my nerves. I love the rest of the cast as an ensamble, I just think those three are worked into every storyline and a lot of the time it seems forced.

It would be difficult to drop Sally Field as she's the meddling mother who has to have her hands in everything. She means well, but you know that there hardly is going to be a plot line involved w/o her. Which again, remidns me of my woman's mother.

But I've only started watching it recently, so I haven't formed a greater opinion of the show ... other than Balthazar Getty not showing up as much.

Butterfly, brine, rub and grill.

Optionally, if grilling in below freezing weather is not appealing, you can broil it in the oven on a bed of vegetables in a heavy roasting pan.

Dunno why it just hit me, but how about General Tso's Turkey? :P

Dark Archive

That sounds good. Maybe with the leftovers.

MmmmmmMMmmm...Chinese. My lady's going to be returning back to school this quarter (this evening). Just maybe I should pick something up on the way home so she won't feel tortured being around me eating that as she won't be home until past 9pm.
