Some questions from a newbie

Rules Questions

Hi guys,

I'm new to pathfinder (and rpg games in general...) and new to this forum. I've played a lot of boardgames and wanted to try something new. Since i always liked the baldur's gate series and my search led me to pathfinder.

I hope you can answer some questions for me, i hope you don't mind there really newbie questions.. but i'm still trying to understand the rulebook.

1. So i've read the rulebook and am trying to create a character. Is there anyway to check if i've done everyting the right way? Is there a good character creater (maybe the xploderpg one.. or some other good excel sheet?). The only way to check if i understand everything correcly is to download the characters from the paizo site and level them up myself and see if i come to the same totals... In the rules the character sheet isn't really explained.. i hope to find some more explenation.

2. I don't really get the hit dice rule. Are the hit dice only for creating the current hit points totals? If i understand the hit dice correctly, i get one hit dice everytime i level up. I don't understand this from the rules.. i hope someone can point me to the right pages where the hit dice rules are described. But for example how i understand this at this time..a dual class character fighter level 4 and rouge level 5 gets (fighter is d10 right?) 4d10 and 5d8? so 9 hit dice in total?

3. If you level in a favored class you get 1 hit point or 1 class rank. So maybe this is really straight foreward to answer (but since i'm dutch and i'm doing my best to understand the english in the book).. but if this is in an example... you go from 20 hit points to 21 or you gain 1 rank in an class you choise taking into regard you can't go beyond your current level in class as your total level (so this is the same as the total hit dice number...).

I'm likely to be back with more questions.. but i hope you can answer these for me for now... Sorry if my English issn't perfect (i'm from the netherlands). I'm doing my best.

Greetings Thierry

Yes, that's more or less it. :)

Every time you level up, you choose a class in which to level. Let's say your character is an eighth level character with four fighter leves and four rogue levels. When he levels up you decide to add a fifth fighter level. You simply check out the table for the fighter and see what you gain for the fifth fighter level - that's it!

One level in a favored class grants you one hit point or one skill rank extra. So yes, if you have 20 hit points and you decide to take the hit point, you then have 21.

You're doing good - if you've got something you don't understand about the rules, simply come back here and ask.

Thanks for you quick reaction! And thanks for the answers to 2 and 3.. i understand the rules a lot better now!

Check out Erian7's Excel character generator. It's the best one I've found. The current version can be found at

Oh, I do mind. I'm pissed already.

Just kidding. Fire away.

You can upload the numbers and ask people to check them.

Do you know anyone who has played RPGs before? It's always useful to have someone with experience at the table.

Yeah. Every level gets an appropriate HD.

The standard rules are that you get the first HD (the one you get at 1st character level) is full (as if you rolled the highest possible number), the other ones are rolled.

A popular alternative ruling is to use average values, rounded up (average value of a d8 is 4.5, so you use 5). That makes character generation less random, which is something many people don't like. This usually goes hand in hand with generating ability scores with the purchase method (where you get a certain allowance of points and purchase ability scores with it) instead of rolling dice for them.

When you take a level in a favoured class, you either get one extra HP, or an extra skill point.

HP: You get one extra HP. If you had 20 without that, you have 21 with it. If you do this for 10 levels, you have 10 more HP than without the bonus.

Skill point: You get one more skill point than you otherwise would. You can treat it like any other skill points you have. It doesn't allow you to break the rules. You still cannot put more points in a skill than your level (at level 10, you can only have 10 ranks in a skill. You cannot have 11 ranks, even if one or more of those ranks are bought with favoured class bonuses.

Don't sweat it. A lot of people's English isn't perfect, and for many of these people it's the native language.

Just to add to what people have said, the hit points you get are fixed, i.e. you don't reroll your hit dice every day. This seems to have been a common misreading in earlier editions, so it's probably best to larify it ahead of time. Also, some spells, such as Cause Fear, only affect creatures below a certain number of hit dice. But yes, they're basically there to generate your hit points. For a PC hit Dice and Level are pretty much the same thing. (unless you're using a non-standard race but I wouldn't advise that until you've got used to the rules).

Don't worry about the English. It's certainly better than my Dutch. And most people here are quite happy to help newcomers to understand the hobby.
