Sketched this up at work in my idle time and remade it here.
I think this would be a pretty good gaming table - I took some elements of other neat game tables I've seen and adapted them for ease of construction.
It'd probably be made out of simple plywood or particle board, and probably just have those 30 dollar folding table legs screwed on for easy storage.
Thoughts? Suggestions?

Ages ago I worked for a company that made chalkboards and markerboards, and they sold a thin tape that could be used to make a grid on an existing markerboard instead of having one permanatly put on the board.
That would be an option if the cost difference between a plain one and one with the grid already on it is too great for you budget.

If you could make it taller and instead of whiteboard make it a translucent white screen, you could put a projector in rear mode underneath, strap a wiimote to it, and have multitouch gaming tool for use with maptool or the like. ;)
I am so doing this, as I have all the parts... I'm just waiting for a group to play with!

I designed something like this years ago, but never had the budget to build it. Thankfully, tech prices always come down and things get more affordable. Now if only I can get a steady job :-)
I'm also looking at LCD options for the latest revision, rather than projection, since it does not require the throw distance, which may require the use of mirrors to gain a large enough image.
For projection, you can have the table at normal height, then set the projector horizontal (on the floor, for instance) and use a mirror to angle the image onto the "screen". This solves some problems, and eliminates all the trouble associated with top-down projection (i.e. shadows) tables that most people build.
Of course, the use of mirrors raises the expense, complicates the build and makes the table difficult to disassemble or move.

This fancy device is what I'm waiting for. Laser Pico projector with a 1:1 throw range up to 100" in the size of an iPod. Should be out 1Q of next year for about $500.

killer! I can already see a little plastic clip and base that holds that projector and a wii-mote for portable multi-touch goodness.
Is this same tech in the new LG phone projector I've seen advertised?

I don't know. Only saw the tail end of the commercial (don't watch TV often), however they do have a "Dev Kit" out there that allows companies to develop the tech. It's available overseas now.
EDIT: No, the LG is a DLP projector from the logo I saw here.

hmm, maybe I need to become a "developer"... gonna need a unit to test with, don'tcha think?

When I say "developer", I mean the in house product development team at Motorola/LG/etc to get the projector in the case of the phone. You'd want to wait for the final product and save your money ; )

I'm actually really unimpressed with the MS proof-of-concept demo.
It doesn't look half as useful as some existing software (like Maptool) could be on the same device, but I understand a proof-of-concept doesn't need to be fully featured. Really it is just that waiting for that virtual D20 to stop rolling makes me mad every time.

That's exactly like our gaming table!
My advice?
1) Go to Goodwill or Ikea, and buy a cheap kitchen table. Take off the legs.
2) Go to Home Depot. Ask them to cut a number of 2 x 6's in 5 inch blocks. Lie them on their side for a uniform 6 inch riser. Use 4-6 of them like you have in your blueprint.
3) Get some tact-tiles or a gaming map to sit on the top layer.
4) Shift the rise-table slighly down, so the DM has a flat space with his screen buts up against the rise-table. It makes it easier for him to see what's going on!
Great minds think alike sir!

Yeah, pretty close to what my group is using now. I made an MDF board to hold our battlemap and my buddy cut some 4X4 posts up into soda can+1 inch sizes(so the cans can slide underneath but not enough so they tip over if hit under there) and we put 9 of those under it to hold it up. I would suggest allowing more room along lower surface though to accommodate page turning rulebooks. It works well enough although when I redo it there will be some changes. (changes-plywood or a better top for the board, less legs, maybe some integrated shelves of some sort.)
