I love the old gold box games, which is why I'm brutally harsh on the "new" ones and don't think they're anything Atari should be proud of.

Atleast no one has come to D&D Heroes defense. :)

Anyone play Atari's Temple of Elemental Evil?

My question: how'd you do it? That game is unplayable as far as I can tell! It crashes a few seconds after starting even fully patched, your characters never hit, and bad guys always do maximum damage! And it looks too much like Icewind Dale... as in its just Icewind Dale in Hommlet.

The Circle of Seven patch really cleaned up all or most of the crash issues and makes it a good game. I highly recommend it.

Some of them were, at least. Some were not.

Baldur's Gate II goes down as Best D&D game ever for me, in any event, with Torment close behind.

Really? Interesting. I bought it when it first came out and waited a while for patches to play it again. I patched it fully and still had tons of issues. Perhaps I'll try again someday. For now its back to modding my Medieval II: Total War game.

Mine was Azure Bonds. I was thinking funny how now D&D sort of looks like those old games when you enter combat... Were they foreshadowing?

I'm rather torn between the Baldur's Gate series and the Icewind Dale series myself. BG offered a story that went beyond epic; IWD wasn't nearly as epic in its own depth, but was a solid all-around D&D experience.

I agree, overall, these were the best. The BG series and Torment were great, despite being pausible real time, but would have liked them better as turn based.

If you like the gold box games, you might want to check out Knights of the Chalice, which is based on OGL rules (not 100% identical, but pretty close). I've only played the demo so far, but plan on using some holiday money to buy the full game.

They are turn based, kind of. All you have to do is go into the game options and set it so the game pauses at the beginning of each combat round, they had that option available up until Mass Effect. Made playing the games far easier to manage I tell ya what.

I'll come to it's defense!!

While the game itself wasn't anything wonderful, it happened to be the game that got my wife interested in D&D. While we were playing it, she asked me is the pen & paper game like this? I told her no, it's much better. She then replied then why aren't we playing that? And thats what started a wonderful, wonderful 8 years. :D

hey there sir uza,

we dont seem to agree on much.

my friends and i have a great time playing d&d heros.

my girlfriend, i and a couple of friends love playing heros. its really fun. now, we are not power gamers, we like to sit around, laugh, drink beer. we dont rush through games to get to the end to get the next big game.
