Rituals System

Rules Questions

I have heard some muttering on the boards about a "Rituals" system that might be in development at Paizo. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I have a skill-based ritual system in my campaign which is available to any character (spellcaster or otherwise) and revamping that system was next on my to-do list. However, if Paizo is going to do the work for me, I'll move on to my next bullet point.

Thank you.

Rituals system?
Is this anything like the ritualist feat in Mutants&Masterminds RPG?

perhaps it has to do with the witch's ability to work in a coven.

I thought it could be something like; invest time(out of combat) researching and resources(gold), make a skill check(spellcraft) to obtain a magical effect usable in one encounter. Particularly spell effects not avaliable to the caster using the standard preparation or spontaneus magic.

Similar to the 4E rituals? That idea has merit in that it allows anyone to use magic to information gather and undertake certain non-combat protections for a cost instead of a spell slot.

Im not familiar with 4E rituals, but yeah, sounds like this would be it.

It might also be similar to the (Open Content) incantation rules from Unearthed Arcana:

I hated the rituals in 4e (played for a year)...definitely not implemented well, it was their way to give back some of the things stripped from spellcasters, only anyone can use them and there is no system or logic behind them, really seemed like an afterthought IMO... I hope to god nothing like that shows-up in PF!

Humm......rituals in pathfinder......I left running and screaming from wotc for a reason, I didn't like 4e, so I definitely 100% don't want anything even remotely like that in pathfinder. But it's not up to me so I guess I'll adopt a wait and see attitude for now.

Have you taken a look at the Unearthed Arcana rules for incantations? If not, it's worth checking out the link I posted above, IMO.

Well, checked-out your link, and that is a FAR cry from what I've seen in the previously mentioned system. It seems that said system tried to do a throw-back or something to this, and failed miserably IMO. The sample ritual they provide below is pretty frightening, and awesome!

We use a variant magic system (published for the Thieves' World by Green Ronin, I think) that has rituals; basically they take longer to cast, but also last longer (1 round = 1 turn; 10 rounds = 10 turns; 10 hours = 10 days, etc.). I think this sort of ritual casting system might help PCs a lot, as they'd (typically) only need to cast a "buff" once per, say, three days or even a week.

If this is true and Paizo is developing a ritual system, I'm very curious to see how it turns out; after all, I was initially very leery about a LOT of content in APG and GMG (but previews are proving that I didn't have any reason to be!).

That's really close to what I meant.

And yes, I would also be interested in seeing something like this developed.

Rituals would be cool if done right. I like to run survival horror games and haven't found a way of handling magic in a "human only-earth bound-zombie apocalypse" style of game. A ritual system utilizing scrolls, tomes, old relics, and/or places of power would be AWESOME!!!!

What I would also love to see (for my typical fantasy games) is circle magic. Similar concept of what we see in with hags, witches, Final Fantasy 11 opening sequence (2:40), and anything else depicting a group of mages casting a single spell and having it do things well outside its normal means. (e.g. huge blocks of ice falling from the sky, fireballs exploding in 60' radii, etc).

Well, I have looked this over and it seems fine. I can see some uses for this in play. I need some more free time though to experiment with it and see what I think about it in detail.
