Is it possible to have a character switch factions?

Pathfinder Society

Scarab Sages 5/5

Hello I’m not sure where to place this question. I remember reading somewhere, that all of the factions, Andoran, Cheliax, Taldor, Qadira, and Osiron, were vieing for control of Absalom. Each character in the Pathfinder Society organized play belonged to one of these “national” factions. And through their accomplishments, one of these factions would gain further influence in the affairs of Absalom. After reading the descriptions of the various factions, I picked Andoran, because it closely matched my personal temperament.

I then created a character to use in the Pathfinder society organized play. Inn the beginning of November I went to a convention in Vermont called Carnage on the Mountain. I had a great time, played lots of Pathfinder organized play. I got my character from 1st to 3rd level. One more adventure and he will be 4th level. I got two hours of sleep that weekend. I had a great time. . For this character I picked Andor, because, I wanted to make sure I did my part to tip Absalom in Andor’s favor.

While at the convention, I heard that because the majority of people had signed up for either Cheliax or Andor, the planners decided to do away with this possibly competitive element. I also took a closer look at the factions. My character Fatum Aedituss Venificus, is a 2nd level cleric of Pharisma (with the healing and repose domains) and a 1st level wizard with the Necromancy specialty. He believes that to fully understand life, you must understand death as well. Ying and yang that sort of thing.

When I took a closer look at the Factions I realized that my character would be a much closer fit to the Osiron faction.
Would it be possible to change my characters faction? Would the “prestige” that I have accumulated be transferable? Thank you.

The campaign guide spells it out quite clearly. once a character has chosen a faction the only way he leaves it is Mafia style... walk off the pier wearing cement overshoes.

Once chosen, you cannot un-choose your faction.

Your character idea sounds great, though, and easily fits Andoran as well as Osirion.

Hey Joshua, on the off chance that faction competitiveness is not a totally dead issue, you might want too hook up with the folks at Pardigm Press on some tips with a type of event they would hold at the big conventions for the Living Arcanis Campaighn... the Battle Interactive. Players were squared off by faction and sent to tables where they each had objectives to meet, the overall developments of the Interactive were parsed by the general success rate of each faction's players.

The following is example test of the last one that was done for the end of Year 6. http://www.livingarcanis.com/adventures/year6.html

"LA-AP6-02 For the People" by James Zwiers

Amidst the stoic columns of the Senate, voices rise in anger and contention. Amongst the quiet chambers of the baths, voices are raised in insurrection. The fires of insurrection are being fanned in Grand Coryan, the City of Emperors, the Seat of the Patriach, Heart of the Resistance?

This is an urban adventure. The loyalties of characters involved in the Coryani Civil War, while being tested, is not a cause for concern when playing this adventure. Opportunities exist for both Loyalists and Rebels to participate; while also providing opportunities for others who are not involved in the Civil War to also be involved. This adventure may be of particular interest to those who fought at the Battle of Solanos Mor and/or the Battle of Savona.

It is sad that the rebuilt after PFRPG went out did not allow for changing a character's faction.

I would have loved to make a dancing dervish of the Qadira faction, but my choice of the Andoran faction a long time ago, in a completely different environment, prevents it :-(

Thank you everyone for your answers.

Spoiler:

During one of the scenarios, we had to go into a museum and face all sorts of strange fungus, a gibbering mouther etc, and when we finally got to the basement we found the missing scion we were looking for. She was standing in front of an open portal or gate way, with a myriad of tentacles attached to her. there was also some sort of magical device attached to the top of the arch of the portal. a zombie came after us, and I was able to command it, and told it to climb up the arch and destroy the glowing thing at the top. One of the other players at the table exclaimed " but your part of the Andoran faction, you cant do that!"
After the DM looked at my character sheet, he said " yes he can"

We had a good time
I enjoy being able to both command and turn undead. Short of taking a one level of wizard and then another of cleric, i have not been able to find a way to have the channel energy class feature stack between levels. Come to think of it, there is most likely a very good reason why. it seems very powerful.

Does anyone know of a way i could get my Turn undead and Command undead to stack as I advance in levels multi-classing between wizard and cleric??

Thanks

You may want to reconsider your choice of deity to someone more attuned to undead. I can understand how you would think that Pharasma, being a goddess of death, would be down with undead control but she really isn’t. From the entry on Pharasma in the Pathfinder Chronicles ‘Gods & Magic’:

Members of the priesthood are usually clerics, diviners, or “white necromancers” (wizards who study necromancies other than the creation of undead), though especially skilled midwives and hedge wizards have been known to gain authority in some areas. Priests oversee births, and having one at childbirth almost always assures that mother and child will live. They are the stewards of the dead, and most are familiar with funereal customs from their own and nearby lands. They are the protectors of graveyards and the memory of those who have died, guarding sites from robbers and corpse-animators and memorizing or recording what they know about anyone who dies in their presence. The church despises the undead as abominations to the natural order, and all priests follow this belief without question; creating undead is forbidden, and controlling existing undead frowned upon.

I'm not telling you it's against the rules or anything, just pointing out something you might not be aware of. Nethys is a popular Osirion deity and would make a good fit for your character as well. Here's a bit about Nethys:

His followers are those who desire magical knowledge or power, arcane or divine, regardless of how they want to use it—to destroy, invent, or protect. The church of Nethys tries to balance the god’s two aspects, but individual temples often focus on one particular type of magic and draw worshipers interested in that type. Opposing temples might war on each other, but Nethys doesn’t care, just as he doesn’t care if a good temple siphons magic from evil items, locks them away, or converts them to a more benign use.

This may fit your yin/yang concept better. Again, just a suggestion :)

I don't mind the Rule, No Switching -- but there should be a little more info available before the choice is made. Or an allowance after one or two adventures to get a taste of how Factions actually impact the game.

I chose Andoran over Cheliax but it was a very difficult choice. I wanted more info on how the adventures would run. Players should have access to a little more practical info before we choose.

I've played through 3 scenarios, #s 29, 30 & 31. Before we started, I was under the impression the Factions would play a bigger role. When I found out that members just got a little note from our Faction "rep" to do a minor side job I was disappointed -- great design idea; I'll use it in my Homebrew. But in retrospect I could be running my PC for Cheliax.

Now, I'm relatively content with my choice of Andoran, and I haven't seen any of the three Cheliax "side jobe" notes for the adventures I've gone through, but I think I could have made it as a Cheliax member. It fits more with my character background.

Ultimately I chose Andoran because my PC is trying to one day be "good" enough to be a Paladin. I was afraid that it wouldn't be a good fit for Cheliax -- now I think I'm wrong; he should be in the Cheliax Faction.

I have a differing viewpoint but I think we come to the same conclusion. I think there is enough information available to make an informed decision if the player reads the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play. However, many players have only discovered what Pathfinder Society is about as they sit down to play for the first time. They have to make a Faction decision with mere minutes to consider their character concept. Later when they have time to reflect on the mission and the flavor of their choice they experience a type of buyer's remorse. There should be an option to change factions within a limited window of time. But I do believe the onus is on the players to educate themselves. There's always the option to set the first character aside and start a new one with the favored faction.

I added spoiler tags to a post above. Please use spoiler tags when revealing scenario information outside of a spoiler thread.

Joshua thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
How does one place a spoiler tag? I don’t know how to do that.

I can appreciate the removal of the factions influencing Absalom’s politics. D&D and pathfinder is for the most part a cooperative game. I can see how such a competitive element could prevent a pathfinder group form completing their mission while the brief game devolves into infighting.

Doung Doung, thank you for your clarification about Pharisma. From the text you have quoted I can see how the creation of the undead would be an anathema and the controlling frowned upon. Perhaps I have erred on my choice of Deity.
With Pharisma being the goddess of Fate death prophesy and birth, and with the domains death, healing, knowledge, repose, and water, it gave me the ying and yang idea with positive and negative energy, of life and death.

I used an online English to latin translate rot make my charactre’s name. I am sure there are people whose Latin is far better then mine. Fatum I think means fate, Aeditus, I think is one who brings prophesy or a holy word, and Venificus I think means wizard.

Anyways thanks.
