Can anyone point me to which AP included the best summary of how characters join the Pathfinder Society - Access seems unclear. Please do not respond by revealing any information about CoT.

I think your best bet is to pick up Seekers of Secrets.

Pathfinder #1 had some Society stuff, not sure about joining it though, however this is the answer to all your PFSociety questions really, don't read the Delvehaven bit, otherwise your okay. Note the Delvehaven bit doesn't have any spoilers I can think of, but it might.
