If anyone knows of a really short, free, 1st level adventure that is available I would love to know where to dl it and an idea about it.
Ideally what I am looking for is something that starts in a village/town with some limited NPC interactions, and heads to a ruin or small cave type of area for the adventure and can be completed in one 2-4 hours session.
This is for me to tweak a bit, make terrain for, and use to introduce a few young (7-9yr old)cousins to the idea of what rpgs are. I am probably using Microlite 20 rules for this so the base system is secondary.
I made a small outpost for the one kid and he is just plan loving it and wants more so I figured I would give more while swelling the RPG ranks a bit. I just wanna make sure it sticks.
Thanks all.

Tomb of Terrors might work out okay for what you're after, it deals with undead but there isn't anything too nasty and could probably be modified to be child-friendly... It's actually for Savage Worlds and I played through it with my group in order to test out the system. There isn't terribly much to it, but everyone had fun and it wouldn't be much work to use in a different setting.
To find it just scroll down to 'Genre Supplement - Wizards and Warriors' at the link I sent and the adventure can be found in the Tomb of Terrors download bundle.

Burning Plague not only fits the bill perfectly, but is a Good adventure besides.
I ran this at 3rd-4th level (it scales up or down easily) for my previous campaign. They had been in a major city and doing a lot of urban, mystery and RP stuff and while out in the wilds asked for "a good, old-fashioned dungeon crawl" so I gave them Plague.
The adventure and NPC interaction became so involved that it literally re-tuned the focus of the campaign and ended up changing in-world regional politics.
Regardless, it's a great little adventure that can scale well for the interests of the Players, but has a classic feel to it.
I think it will be perfect for you.

I thought that but it is a bit too much for a short session, which is a shame because I love it, but I think it loses too much if stripped down much.

Any of the Pathfinder Society adventures might work. They're designed for like 4 hours, 3-4 encounters, Oh wait, free? Not quite, but short and cheap, yes.
EDIT: Okay, now I'll try to be more helpful.. If you're not concerned about edition, WotC has 2 "sample" adventures for 4E - Keep on the Shadowfell and Khyber's Harvest here.

Yeah Orc n Pie is quick and fun. :-)
Not exactly short but probably in my opinion the best low level adventure was the Night of the Walking Dead module for 2ed Ravenloft. Not sure if they have it up for free on Wizards website or not. It is the only adventure in any game system I have run more than once.

I wrote one for AE that could easily be run in 3.5. It's called "Fine Print". (I even noticed someone here running a game on the PBMB forum using it a while back. It's great to see that you can help someone out with their game.) It's a city-based, one-evening-including-PC-creation duration adventure. :)

The World's Shortest (Yet Technically Complete) Adventure, linked. The key word in the title being "technically"...
Enjoy ('cause who doesn't enjoy pie?),

It's $3.99 (and thus, not free) but Tim Hitchcock's Pathfinder Society Scenario #24: The Decline of Glory fits this description eerily well. It's also one of the more well-reviewed scenarios and one of my personal favorites. This scenario was also written to be ran in 4 hours.

Almost forgot. It's not "really" short, but it is fun and free. The Wizard's Amulet from Necromancer Games.
Go here. Its partway down. http://www.necromancergames.com/freestuff.html
Ah, now that is one of my favorites...good memories...might be a bit longer than the original request.
