At 7th level I can take Improved Familiar to have one of these things as a familiar.
Looks to me like I can pay 2050gp to have one made for me, or get Craft Construct (and Craft Magic Arms + Craft Wonderous) in order to make one for myself.
Presumably, although it's a familiar with higher effective HD and HP, I still only make it as a 2HD creature (spending another 2000gp in making it (or 4000gp to buy it?) would give it an extra HD which could be used for a feat, I guess).
If I wanted to get into crafting constructs, incidentally, would I need the requisite Craft skills or could I get some craftsman to build the thing and then animate it myself? How much would it cost to do things that way?
Presumably, if you're missing some of the spells, you can hire a spell caster at the normal cost (10gp x spell level x caster level) for the number of days that it takes to make the thing (1 day per 1000gp base price). The price to make one then becomes raw-materials + craftsman's time + cost of spells cast by someone else. Is that right?
