Monsters from Destination: Truth

Homebrew and House Rules

Dark Archive

For those of you who haven't seen Destintion Truth, it is a show where a group of explorers travel the world investigating monster sightings. I have watched the show since it started and have recently started stating up the monsters they investigate. Someone asked me to post some of them, so here goes.

Chullachaqui are feral humanoids that live in the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse and in some of the warmer forests of Taldor and Andorian. Some speculate that the are related to goblins or maybe even gnomes, but the savage chullachaqui arn't giving any answers ad gnomes and goblins both deny this fact, goblins usually violently.

Chullachaqui usually stand no taller then two and a half feet tall an have tangled, stringy black hair. Most of them walk with a slouch so they appear even smaller than they are. They have a feral gleem in their red eyes and are constantly sniffing the air searching for prey or enemies.

In the northern regions of the world the thunderbird is one of the dominate predators. It soars through the sky looking for prey, which usually consists of elk or moose. Many tribes of northern barbarians adopt the thunderbird as a totem animal and it's apperance is considered to be an auspicious omen.

Weren
Looming over nine feet tall, the monster infront of you looks like a mix of human and wolf. Suddenly it drops to all four and rushes forward with unbelievable speed.

Enviroment: Mountains and forests

Treasure: Incidental

Quadrapedal Movement (Ex): By dropping to all fours, the weren can move at +10 ft per round. Doing so causes them to lose their claw attack.

Weren are humanoids that have many of the characteristics of wolves. It may be that they are related to lycanthropes, but unlike werewolves, they cannot change their shape. They are also incapable of humanoid speech, instead communicating with a series of howls and barks.
Weren live in mountains and forests on the outskirts of humanoid settlements. They usually prey on cattle and other livestock but will attack lone humanoids or small groups if they believe they can overpower them. They are solitary creatures who only come together to mate and raise children.

This is based on the Romanian werewolf myth.

I covet your ability to confidently assign CRs and XP values. My own critter designs suffer from my lack of confidence with those mechanics.

I like the Weren's quadripedal movement ability. I was thinking of adding that to a small race, so that they only had 20 ft. movement normally, but 30 ft. movement if they used their oversized arms to dash ahead. (In the Scarred Lands, Weren is just a type of smarter than average large wolf that lives near Hollowfaust!)

Can the Thunderbird use it's lightning bolt at will, or X times per day, or once / d4 rounds or whatever?

The Sal'awa, to me, feels very much like an oversized Hyena, and the stats are close enough to the 'dire' hyena or hyaenadon, that I'd be tempted to make them the same creature (or at least just use the same Sal'awa to describe the 'dire hyena', as that name isn't terribly inspiring).

I've never seen Destination Truth, but I'd be interested in seeing what sort of lore they'd dig up on the Mngwa or Unktehi, my two favorite cryptids/mythical beasties.

For the Mngwa, a tiger sized gray cat with extreme climbing and nearly (if not actually) supernatural stealth abilities would be about right, while the Unktehi is a poisonous giant water serpent with mystical abilities and deer-like antlers, which could probably be represented by some sort of water naga / sphinx mash-up.

RPG Superstar 2012

I haven't seen Destination Truth, either, but I've got to say these monsters are great in their own right. I really like how you've tied them to Golarion and given a lot of thought to where they'd fit in.

Weren...that takes me back to Alternity. Here I'd thought the name was made up.

For some reason, I'd always pictured the Thunderbird doing a sonic blast attack, kinda like the thunder-version of a phoenix.

Good stuff, David!

It's every 1d4+1 rounds. I fixed it in the stat block.

Sal'awa is actually just Egyption for "large dog." In the investigation they determined that it is a case of mistaken identity. People are being attacked by feral dogs, but people are also seeing a rarely observed species of fox that is smaller then what the Sal'awa is described as being, but otherwise fits the description. Combine the two in the minds of a frightened populace and wallah, instant monster.

Native American lore generally portrays it as "throwing" lightning. That is why I went that direction.

I should post my stats for the sasquatch, skunk ape, chupacabra, mothman and Krampus. I was going to do the Jersey Devil, too, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
