Under the right (rare) circumstances a single wizard can dominate a fight of equal CR on his own, but the vast majority of the time the game doesn't play out in that manner. To pretend that it does, and to play the game as a wargame in which you have no attachments to NPCs and only ever take the most cost effective and paranoid options regardless of PC flavor.

Often, this is exactly the problem with the conversations regarding the overpowerdness of Wizards. Yes, they can do it all. Can they do it all at once? Can they do it all when they need to? What happens when they (in 3.5, PFRPG limited this option) are hit with 2 greater dispells during the surprise round that strip all their protections away? What happens when the Adult Red Dragon has a cleric ally that casts Pro from Cold on him, but the Wiz only knew about the Red Dragon?
Theoretically, the Wiz is the most powerful character. In gameplay, they are a valuable component, along with everyone else.
