Need A Cohort!

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Dark Archive

So, I'm playing an 11th level Fighter in a group with a Druid, a Wizard, and a Cleric/Doomguide with a Bard Cohort. I'm trying to decide on a cohort for my character and I need some advice on what to bring in to help the group (and myself). I've considered various divine casters, a Marshal, and a few other combat-only types, but none of them are really grabbing me.

Any suggestions?

Something that includes rogue might be what you need. It seems that your party would have trouble bypassing magical traps otherwise.

Humbly yours,
Yawar

Poke around the PRD bestiary to look at Monster Cohorts, if only because it'd be fun to have something different and to be able to use the shiny new material from Paizo. :)

Thematically, a Rogue trained to flank / fight alongside you would even be cool, with a sort of Fafhrd & Grey Mouser feel. It would also be the best choice for not stepping on any of the other characters toes.

A Beguiler could be fun, on the other hand, if completely not thematic.

A Beguiler, eh? What brought that to mind? :)

Gotta admit, I was a little less than impressed with the Monster Cohort thing, but maybe I'll pass the idea among the ranks and see what they think.

I've recently learned we may be getting a rogue in the form of another player joining the group. (Still might be a good idea, tho.) Any other thoughts?

If you are getting a rogue into the group then there isnt anything you 'need' per say. So its a matter of what you want for your character. Tell us a little bit more about your fighter and we can probably come up with some more interesting ideas. Are you a grizzled old veteran? A young rash champion? A flashy duelist (style of fighting not class) type? This will help come up with a cohort that will compliment your character better both in roleplay and rollplay.

An fighter specializing in archery would be handy.

Tough enough not to get killed the first time a monster goes for him and good enough to add meaningful damage against your foes. He could stay back playing bodyguard for the wizard and still help in the fight from the back ranks.

An archer's not a bad idea, though I'd be more likely to go Scout for damage.

Definitely closer to the young champion, though not particularly rash. :) He's a Glaive fighter with the Vital Strike feat chain, the Combat Form feats from PHB2, and pretty much every feat I could come up with that would make him better at attacking with a two-handed slashing reach weapon.

In that case you need someone or something to go along with keeping the enemy at bay. An example is a guisarme armed fighter with feats like improved trip and standstill. Side by side it will be difficult to close the gap with you two. Would be an interesting teamwork dynamic.

Another good choices would be a caster with solid buff spells. A sorceror would probably be less likely to overshadow your party wizard. Stick with mostly spells that will help you and your party, especially in your case, enlarge person. Reach weapons + enlarge person = sucks to be your enemies. That way the cohort isnt really taking over the fight, just helping everyone else do what they do better.

Hadn't thought of that at all. I'm gonna build that one just to see what it looks like!

Caster with buffs was my first thought, but I was thinking divine. Arcane might be even better, though. Any other spell selections you can think of before I go digging around in PFRPG and the Spell Compendium?

Which is exactly what I wanted out of a cohort. :)
