It's a proof of concept so no price tag yet but if and when manufacturing commences (hopefully allowing you to use the rule set of your choice as, to my untrained eye that looked like it may have been 4e) it will not be cheap but it could potentially be used for a variety of purposes not just D & D. Thousands of dollars American initially would be my guess.

Your correct it was 4E.

It's not that cool actually if you look at a lot of the other tables out there. That one is too small and looks to be pretty poor in functionality even if it's just a proof of concept.

Now something like this at http://www.ultimategamingtable.org/, http://www.penpaperpixel.org/tutorials/tabletopprojection/ or even http://www.agyris.net/v3/ugt/default.asp would be something I'd personally much rather gaming on. Plus your not needing to spend 10k plus on a silly Microsoft surface.

Well I think their proof of concept missed what would probably be the tables most useful feature - move your mini and the darkness covering the map lights up - in other words a built in adventure mapper.

The projection table that Morgen mentioned does the same thing.

What I like about this Microsoft table is that it looks like it can keep track of the rules for you, making it so you can concentrate on what your character is going to do, rather then get caught up in the rules of how to do it.

Projection tables will do it but it means having the correct set up and requires quite a bit of work on the DMs part. You often have to tell the players to close their eyes so that the DM can look at the whole map and erase the area of the mask that the players can know see. Its amazing compared to not having a projection map but its still a bit of a kludge.

Build your own, like these guys did.

If this actually got anywhere near consumer production it would see a TON more polish. I can't wait for this sort of thing to inch closer to reality for your average gamer. Not only would it be capable of handling rules for you, but it saves the DM the time he would otherwise have spent drawing out the map (and with much nicer-looking results).

And, of course, as it turns out Penny Arcade was behind it all along!
